Description
Whiplash began as a side project for Alan & Alex back in 2016. Both working in brewing already, they rented tanks at the weekend and released single batch small releases for fun from their own place of work and other friend’s breweries around Ireland. Professional beer dudes who were gypsying for fun. Things escalated and by the end of 2017 Whiplash was its very own pain in the neck with the guys going full time, brewing Whiplash beer all over Ireland and Europe. 2019 saw the two complete their microbrewery build and establish Ballyfermot, Dublin as Whiplash headquarters complete with their own custom designed brewhouse delivering small batches of big beers. Now with a home, a kit and a small crew: Whiplash are very much the Dublin brewery at the forefront of all that’s modern in Irish beer.

Can picked up from Beyond Beer webshop, Hamburg, Germany and consumed at home Thursday 4th June 2026 after some housework and gardening chores, we cooked outside in the wood oven, we had a Chicken, Potatoes and Rhubarb Traybake, a recipe courtesy of Jonas and Ursula, thanks guys 👍🏼. Anyway onto the beer, it pours black with a creamy textured off white head, the creaminess comment doesn't end there though as there's a creamy oatiness and mouthfeel with nice rich roasted malts. However as it's a breakfast stout the coffee really is the key ingredient here and gives this a lovely aroma and smooth lingering roast coffeeness to the taste. It's not quite as thick or rich in the mouth as I was expecting, it's a little more simple and straightforward, I guess my first thought was, would it be like some of the big coffee stouts from the past e.g. Mikkeller, but the hop intensity is really dialed down here it is all about the way that the coffee and roasted malts work in tandem and they go together very well. Btw Loz knocked my can over fortunately I already had a glass full, so probably ended up with just 250ml rather than 500ml 🤣Score: 7.5

Black with a small tan head. Roasted malts, coffee, sweet cocoa, earthy, caramel. Medium bodied. Finish is similar with a snap of booze. 8% is heavy for the style and it shows.

very hazy pale yellow colour, large, dense ecru-ish white head; aroma of lemony-lemon zesty, passion fruity, some mango, star fruit, and peachy notes; hoppy bittery taste with similar notes to the aroma; not bad!

Tap at Ambasada. Murky yellow-orange body, off-white head. Cabbagey aroma, sweetish citric aroma. Overripe mango taste, smooth, no bitterness, clean maltiness, bit flat, okay, bit dull. Not bad.

Can from Hop Burns and Black. My first Whiplash since Alex Lawes' death, may he rest in peace.
Pours a cloudy golden yellow with a nice white foam. Nose is super juicy - papaya and pineapple, some sticky resin. Medium sweetness, medium bitterness, very dank. Medium body, creamy carbonation, strong fruit hop finish. Really nice hop forward IPA, would drink this again and again.

Can from Ambasada, shared in Valhalla Prague with Gurthnar, Adam V and Zhenya. Black body, nice big tan head, gone soon. Huuuuge roasty, chocolatey aroma, whoooooa, coffee, bit of candied orange, herbal. Smooth, dry, earthy, roasty, chocolatey, coffeeish, candied orange, ends bitterish, but doesn't overdo it, drinkable. Pretty classy!
