Description
The brewery was founded in 2005 by four home brewers who wanted to make high quality beers. In 2016 two of the original founders retired, and the brewery is today owned by a constellation of the two remaining founders, some employees at the brewery and three other Norwegian craft breweries.
Haandbryggeriet currently has 10 employees all participating in developing new ground breaking beers and recipes.
The brewery has a wide selection ranging from classic and traditional beers to new and innovative brews and hybrid beer styles. Sometimes brewed with local and Nordic ingredients such as cherries, sea buckthorn, raspberries, and lingonberries. Haandbryggeriet has since 2005 also made high quality sours and barrel aged beers such as porters and Christmas beers.

Bottled. Have compared some of the early batches with the later one and found a big improvement. The best of them will count for this rating. Golden, medium dark, hazy body with a rather small head. Delicious aroma of hops and citrus with hint of hay. Quite a mild IPA, refreshing, fruity and easy drinkable. Great IPA for those not to keen on the hops.

500ml bottle (batch 31, bb. April ’09). Gives a shot and a good smoke when opened. The content tries to get out of the bottleneck on its own (so be sure to have a glass nearby). Huge, noisy brownish foam, quickly disappearing, but can be enjoyed every time you fill the glass. Aroma has got notes of spiciness, some wheat and dark malt. Sweet espresso taste with solid hints of aniseed. There is also riped fruity notes in the flavour. Moderate yeasty ending. The flavours are being blocked by the overcarbonation of the brew, but the taste comes through when the brew developes in the glass (12.11.2006).

Bottled. A nice, spiced aroma escaped the bottled immediately after opening. Promising. It pours dark brown, with lots of carbonation and a lovely, dense, lasting tan head. Some sediments in the bottom. The nose is spiced at first, with coffee-like bitterness, hops and some sour notes. Quite roasted flavor with sweetness, hops, spicyness, dried fruits and notes of coffee. Some vinous notes as well. Pleasant mouthfeel, fullbodied and drying. The finish is warming and quite hopped, with a spicyness and an alcohol-note that lasts quite long. Nice! Rating: 7-4-8-4-15-3.8.(061106)
Bottle, 2008 vintage, #187. Courtesy of the brewery. Pours a very dark brown body, slightly unclear, under a finger thick, dense, beige head. Licorice, roasted malts, coffee beans, some notes of prunes and subtle resiny, citrusy hops in the aroma. Full-bodied, quite low on carbonation, rather dry, and with flavors of roasted malts, piney and citrusy hops giving a pleasant bitterness, coffee, a little touch of salty licorice and some dark chocolate. A tiny touch of sourness too. Fine roasted finish with a balancing bitterness. Really pleasant this year, but not so very Christmasy anymore. (090101)

Medium light brown head; opaque black body. Firm, spicy, harmonic aroma of wood, cloves, and pine needles. Firm, harmonic woody taste of pepper, cloves, and hops. Very soft, smooth and well-rounded. Has a sharpish burnt edge as well, which kind of defines the beer. Very nice, and highly drinkable. (0.5l bottle.)
