Pours black with an average-sized light brown head. Cocoa coffee aroma. The flavor follows the aroma with a sweet finish. Thin bodied.

12oz bottle pours clear copper with gold edges and off white head. The aroma begins with a mild brief shot of roasted malts that get covered by sweet pale to Munich type malts and spice to floral to citrus hops. Very mild aroma so these notes were subtle. The taste is very much like the aroma with a quick hit of roasted malts followed by pale malts mixed with Munich malts. There’s muted floral and hop spice murmuring up from time to time. Into the finish sweet malts and caramel actually becomes the dominant flavor components mixed with more Munich type malts. Nice lager.

Draft, 1812 amber at Harry’s, Tallahassee FL. A very nice amber, about as good as the style can be. Featured a grassy peppery hop (Britishy) with a mildly caramelized bready malt with a medium mouthfeel. Reminded me of fresh Bass Ale to a degree. Clean presentation, fresh. Good partner to food and good for sessions.

So I never came across this year’s batch in NYC and none of the locals as far as I know did either. All of a sudden I stop by this out of the way beer distributor that never carries anything special compared to my regular stops and I see this bottle. At first I dismissed it as the 04/05 Porter, thought for 5 seconds of buying it but I still had one in the cellar and moved on. Then later that evening realized that I was looking at the DIPA earlier. Less than a week goes by and I returned to the store and picked up their only bottle. Weird is all can say.
Popped the cap and despite this being a year and a half long, I could smell the hops a foot away from the bottle neck. Poured into a small goblet glass with a tea like amber color and a small head. Aroma is sweet, oily, resiny hop with a strong early grey tea like aspect. Just a hint of sweet caramel maltiness (a bit aged) but tea-hops is the best way for me to describe this. Taste is oily, sweet grapefruit and on the back end there is even a slight aged sweet maltiness. Aftertaste of tea. Feels just a bit syrupy on the cheeks, moderately carbonated, making for a nice present and smooth yet medium bodied feel on the palate. Light bitterness in the finish.

Black with some very minor cola tints. Light tan head is small and only moderately retained, leaving blotchy lacing.
This one didnt seem as successful as the last two incarnations. Obviously without the juicy hoppiness of their porter, but it also seemed to have too little carbonation, adding some wateriness. A waxy or oily texture as well, contributes to this effect.
Some coffee and vanilla in the nose, with lots of base malt sugar and a very fudgey chocolatiness. Respectable and without flaw, but perhaps a touch too much on the dark malt.
Crunchy roast is washed away by an oiliness that is full of chocolate and vanilla cream. Sweetness fails quickly however and the roasted bitterness returns on the end, though it’s more crusty and astringent, lending some slight scorched coffee notes. Soft, flowery hops are an afterthought and the alcohol is well-concealed. Well-done again, but nothing exceptional stands out and the malt complexity is somewhat lacking.

Pours deep darkness with multi hued brown head. Full aroma of coffee grounds, dark chocolate, roasted malts, burnt malts, hints of vanilla and wood. There’s also some sweet molasses in the nose to add some balance. Inviting aroma. Wow, great flavor with an array of tasty rich malts. I taste smooth dark chocolate mixed with coffee, burnt malts, hints of sweet molasses and licorice. Delicious. Lots of interest. There is tasty coffee, burnt malts and chocolate that goes on forever into the after taste.

Yowsa, I’ve never seen a regular (non-impy) stout pour so dark! Nearly black even during the pour, with a tan foaming head. Aroma is light but dominated by coffee and burnt bread. Interesting flavor, with notes of dark chocolate and strong roasted grain, mostly dry except for a hint at a cereal sweetness. Finishes like cappucino, with a creamy coffeeness, maybe a touch of milk chocolate. Soft, smooth palate, although medium in body. What a unique beer (and I’d consider it a dry stout rather than a sweet stout). Definitely a sipper and a pretty good recipe for a winter seasonal (too bad it hit 80 degrees today!!).

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of Degarth. Pours completely opaque black with a dense, creamy, light brown head leaving some laces. Lightly tart aroma of roasted malt. Medium body, very soft mouthfeel and roasted, lightly burned malt accents with a hint of coffee. Very subdued bitterness. Nice indeed. 090407

Bottle: Dark brown pour with a smaller tan head, no real lacing. Nose of roasted malt, vanilla, very sugary sweet. Taste is more roast, hints of coffee, vanilla, and cocoa. Well balanced in flavor, just a little lighter bodied expected. Thanks IndianaRed for sharing.
