Nara Brewing Tropical Dandy Fruit sour Ale 4% 8 IBU Brassy orange gold with fast dissipating beige foam and a hugely fragrant tart passionfruit aroma. Medium bodied and quit tart. The passionfruit dominates but apparently there’s also mango in the beer which only shows up in the finish/aftertaste in a very subtle way. Quite tasty, no sun but these showers are tropical feeling too I suppose.

Celebrating being on vacation by cracking a big one, I’ve heard lots of good things about these 750ml bottle conditioned beers from Nara Brewing so when I saw this in Yamato-Saidaiji (about 2000¥) I jumped on it. Nara Brewing Integral Saison 7.5% 24 IBU Lovely gold with a white topping of foam that lingers. A bit of barnyard funk with lots of fresh wheat malt events. Very dry very sharp carbonation that primes you got another sip but left me feeling a touch gassy. Chewy malts, funk, wheat, a bit bready with lemongrass. Good stuff, I heard the Brett version is even better. Too dry/gassy for my tastes. Let this open/warm up a bit to get a softer rounder smoother body.

pitch black color. Medium brown head. Nice maple, molasses and dark chocolate character, not that roasty. Maple, dark chocolate, some roasted malt character, cookies and dark fruit. Medium Full body, low bitterness. Low carbonation. Rounded. Pretty nice

deep golden color. Very quick dissipating head. Very heavy malty, sweet cereal nose balanced by massive sake yeast. Very funky and different. Really well made but can’t say I love it.

huge rocky white head. Spicy hops, funky yeast, earthy, brett is there but not overpowering. Super refreshing medium body, smooth palate,dry, funky yeast, modest bitterness, oranges, apples, wheat. Amazing depth. Better than regular integral. Super well balanced, feels lighter than 7.5%.

Nara Eighty Eight Saison w/Green Tea 6% 15 IBU Orange gold in color with a soapy white foam that doesn’t linger. The aroma is a bit eggy sulfur and wheat. Medium to full bodied with a raspy carbonation and the flavor is wheat, zesty tea leaves and some mild saison funk. Quite refreshing and I could see this as a standard table beer paired with a nice creamy cheese and baguette. 990¥ from Isetan though it’s now sold out. 2021 version.

Finally back at Bungalow! Nara Stairs American IPA 6% 48 IBU Clear gold with a dense white foam and nice richly dank musty pine aroma. Fairly full bodied and quite bitter. Very much a classic west coast ipa on the piney side. It goes down a treat.

Bottle from the brewery. Lovely dry bretty nose, citrus, hay, light honey, apple, nectarine. Bright gold, almost clear, huge rocky head that falls quickly. Bright and fruity, stone fruits, citrus, apple, hay, herbs. A bit of sweetness turns into a dry, champagne-like finish. Bright carbonation. Body is perfect. A masterpiece.
