Schooner on tap at The Grain Store, Newcastle. Deep red/brown beer with a thin white head. Fresh light hoppy nose. Light fizz at first. Effervescent, slightly sweet and bitter all at once. Quite a combination! Nice lacing. Lingering tin is more lager-like. Very easy to drink, very late caramel malt makes an appearance. Nice beer.

Can. Black with a bare coat of tan head. Mocha fudge and roast aroma with spiced oak and cracked toffee as much as whiskey. Full bodied but well short of syrupy. Elements have room to move. Whiskey is more prominent than past year but there's mocha, roast, spices and enough bitterness. Not as deep as some but quite refined (and decent value).

Can. Quite a dark brown with a large beige head. Mocha and herbal aroma with some bread. Pretty much how it tastes - rich but clean at first before a little roast and a decently bitter herbal bite at the end. Good.

Can. Black w a fat coat of tan head. Fudgy aroma with rumbling roast, spicy oak, some overt booze. Bread, mocha, roast, more subdued whiskey than guessed, moderate oaky finish with just hints of bitterness. Nice, maybe slightly less assertive than previously, but it's hard to battle one's own expectations.

Cask. Made for an event I missed over the weekend with Ron Pattinson, so perhaps not surprisingly lost a bit of condition. Still, gold with a small white head. Fruity aroma - apples, quince, pear - with bread, light citrus and spice. Full bodied with autumnal fruit being overtaken by bitter oranges. Feels heavier than it is.
