On tap at Local Taphouse, St.Kilda during Good Beer Week 2015: Fantastic rich boozy nose. Follows through in terms of a full-bodied peaty mouthfeel. The interplay between the malts, the hops and the barrels here is simply superb. The ageing has worked a treat and lifted a very good IPA to a whole new level.

On tap at Local Taphouse, St.Kilda during Good Beer Week 2015: given how good a beer the base is, I was really hoping for a party here. The whiskey barrels just haven’t delivered as much as I’d hoping. The aroma is fantastic of course, with strong peatiness. The balance isn’t quite there however, with the hop notes too blunted by the aging.

On tap at Local Taphouse, St.Kilda: Really impressive interpretation of style. Strong resiny aroma. More full bodied than expected. Excellent balance in terms of hop profile. Hides its alcohol punch very effectively.

On tap at Local Taphouse, St.Kilda: Very rich nose for a porter with chocolate coming through. They’ve nailed the thinner, less filling consistency and mouthfeel. The roasted caramel flavours are superbly balanced. This may well be my favourite Australian porter of recent years.

On tap at Local Taphouse, St.Kilda: nice hint of spiciness on the nose. The rye gives it a pleasant fuller mouthfeel. Definite farmy taste profile, especially with pepper playing off against the rye in a nice little battle. I’d happily drink this again and again.

On tap at Local Taphouse, St.Kilda: I didn’t get any of the expected mango or fruitiness coming through in terms of aroma or taste. Similarly, the hopping was very subtle indeed. As such, this was rendered a pretty dull pale ale. It might be ’sessionable’, but it would be a very excited session.

On tap at Local Taphouse, St.Kilda: Not a huge amount coming through on the nose, but it’s a brown ale, so what do you expect? Nice full bodied look and mouth feel. Balanced malt profile with some nuttiness and hints of roastiness. Delivers on style very well.

On tap at Forester’s Hall. Lovely caramel aroma. Full bodied, biscuity red ale. Toasty, sugared flavours built around a complex, well-rounded malt profile. Fantastic effort.

On tap at The Local. Pours black with a small head. Roast chocolate aroma. A beautiful bouquet of tastes, again lead but not dominated by chocolate. Dry finish. Have this after your meal instead of dessert.

On tap (hand pull) at Harts pub. Beautiful citric hop nose. Amber red with small head. Surprisingly thin body with grapefruit bitterness at the end. This is 7.1%?, hides it well. Clean slight hop finish, a little alcohol burn late on. Amazingly light for its ABV.
