Description
We are a hyper-local nanobrewery in Bristol, Vermont with a 3 barrel brewhouse. Reserve your table for outdoor dining Fri-Sat for a true VT farm to pint experience!

Hogback Mountain Brewery was founded in 2015 by Kevin Hanson with his love of brewing.

In 2018 Jamie and Sam Sawyer were looking for a new adventure in the Vermont craft beer scene and Kevin was looking to have more time to mow his lawn. Everything made perfect sense and in 2019 Hogback Mountain Brewery will move from Kevin’s carriage barn to its new location on Rocky Dale Road in Bristol, Vermont. Though Jamie and Sam are changing locations and will branch out with a taproom this spring, the mission of "local supporting local" has never changed.

Sam is 2017 graduate of the American Brewer's Guild and is the creative force behind many of our brews.

TAPROOM is open!! Stop in to experience some true VERMONT beers crafted with Vermont-grown ingredients.

Bottle to mug.
Appearance: dark brown close to black in the glass with a two and a half fingers of khaki foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: milk chocolate, some dark malts and light roasty notes
Flavor: pretty much copies the aromas sweet and roasty; finishes sweet and roasty with some dryness
Texture: light to medium bodied - maybe a touch closer to medium; sessionable; smooth along the tongue
Overall: not a bad chocolate porter. I think I could come back to this.

Can to becher glass.
Appearance: black in the pour and black in the glass with a two and a half fingers of dark tan foamy head head which dissipated nicely to leave some subtle lace
Aroma: floral sweet tones with a light rooty to earthy tone to it; some anise, roasted notes and a black coffee scent rolling in there too
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a fair dry yet sweet earthy sort of roasty quality; finishes dry too with some roasty sweetness
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable; some smoothness but also a good amount of dryness along the tongue; good carb level
Overall: I think the brewer was going for an English styled stout but man oh man, this really did come across as pretty dry.

Can to becher glass.
Appearance: dark brown color with a two finger eggshell white foamy head which dissipated nicely but barely left any lace
Aroma: caramel/toffee malts up front with a kind earthiness in the middle then a light maple sweetness underneath but gently intertwining
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a mostly sweet arrangement and pushing back the earthiness a bit now; finishes mixing the maple sweetness with a semi-dry earthiness
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable; some smoothness but also noted dryness across the tongue
Overall: I liked this beer and the fact that the maple syrup seemed to be right where it's supposed to be without it becoming cloying.

Can to English pint glass.
Appearance: black in the pour and black in the glass with a two finger off-white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: dark malts, mild roast, some black coffee, molasses and a little bit earthy sweetness
Flavor: meshes the prior noted aromas to a roasty to sweet toned malty earthiness; finishes roasty, semi-dry and a touch of molasses
Texture: light to medium bodied, somewhat sessionable; some smoothness leaning towards being mobile on the tongue; the carb seemed fine
Overall: English stout and borderline being watery but I chose the step up and said "mobile" so there's that.

Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas to a bitter to bittersweet vibe; finishes fairly bitter with a touch of dryness

Overall: it's an old school bitter pale ale.

Can to tulip.
Appearance: pale orange haziness with a finger and a half's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: mixed citrusy hops but somewhat stiff; light biscuity malts
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas to a slight bitter to bittersweet sort of vibe; finishes bitter with some dryness
Texture: light to medium bodied, leaning towards being a sipper; some smoothness along the tongue but also an ample amount of dryness and some hop bitterness assertiveness
Overall: maybe in a pinch I could return to this.

Appearance: dark amber color with a two and a half fingers of off-white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: earthy to grassy hops; light caramel/toffee malts and a little bit of toasted nuts
Flavor: blends the prior noted aromas to a fine malty to nutty sweet quality; finishes brisk through the malts and nutty tones
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable; some smoothness but also a bit of earthy grit nicking the tongue a bit but mostly non-offensive
Overall: nice enough amber ale I might be able to come back to.

Can from Airforcehops, undated, from the brewery, drunk 8/21/24. Clear, bright copper-peach-bronze. Good-sized, off-white head slowly recedes to cover. Nose is pretty light all around and, at least, shows no punchy lactic character. Vague citrus, reasonable malt (white bread, biscuit) and nutty wheat. Clean. In the mouth I thought it was a wheat ale (well, a gose is, technically) until I saw it was a gose (also didn't realize the blood orange). Blood orange is a subtle flavor and it's not overdone with lactic acidity. But it's pretty malty and chewy with good attenuation. Would like some more tartness and I didn't find any salinity.

Can pour from trade with AirForceHops--thanks, Chris! Hazy, bright yellow with nice sparkle, thin head quickly fading to a ring and no lacing. Aroma is strong wheat, coriander, clove, lighter banana. Taste follows aroma with stronger banana. Smooth texture, average carbonation and finish as taste. Good representative of the style in breadth and strength of aroma and flavor.

Can pour from trade with AirForceHops--thanks, Chris! Lightly hazy pale yellow with tons of sparkle, fluffy head with excellent retention and soapy lacing. Aroma is strong sweet/tart citrus, grapefruit. Taste is citrus, pine over milder cracker backbone. Smooth texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Good strength traditional IPA.
