Welcome to von Trapp Brewing
Enjoy flavorful, crisp lagers at von Trapp Brewing, located at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont.
Over the course of many visits to Austria, Johannes von Trapp, the youngest son of Maria and the Baron, gained an appreciation for the crisp, clean Austrian lager beers. When the craft beer movement in the United States gained momentum in the early 1990s, there was a noticeable lack of focus on lagers. It’s not surprising, considering that lagers are more challenging to brew, take longer to mature, and are therefore more expensive to create. For two decades Johannes dreamed of building an Austrian-style brewery at the Trapp Family Lodge, and in 2010 that dream came to fruition.
A humble brewery with the capacity of 2,000 barrels per year attracted attention under the name Trapp Lager, and the brewery received requests from all over the United States. The von Trapp family, who had always been reticent to commercialize their family heritage, realized that they had a product deserving of the family name. The new facility, completed in 2015 under the name von Trapp Brewing, allowed the family to expand beyond their home territory and spread the gospel of craft lagers.

Can best before 4/14/25, drunk 12/11/24. Clear, bright brass-golden. Massive, well-retained, white head. Full-on crisp, mineral-rich yeast in the nose with bright herbal hopping and rich malts adding honey and light baguette. Not too far off from the Schilling Jalowetz I just had. Rich, bready, malty with white grape galore and an unusual note of heavy dried oregano that Jow notes, as well. It's quite intense, almost borderline medicinal in its intensity. Otherwise, this is textbook peak lager - deep, rich, well-attenuated malts, crisp yeast finish, bright hops adding balanced bitterness. Tending a touch maltier in balance than, perhaps, would be ideal, but it's a miniscule nitpick. Tons of lingering oregano here...

Can, best before 3/16/25, drunk 12/5/24. Dark. Clear. Small, light-tan head steadily to spotty cover. Gently smokey, bit of ash and woodsmoke, no bacon. Rich, lightly roasted malts with clean yeast and deep malts. Soft, malty, rich and properly attenuated. Good amount of bread, but not too much, not toasty or tannic. Lingering light chocolate, hazelnut, gentle, but appropriate hop bitterness and yeast.

12 ounce can. Barely translucent dark brown color. Large, frothy tan head. Roasted malt and smoky notes on the nose. Sweet roasty flavor upfront and more smokiness. This is an amalgamation of several beer styles. Schwarzbier, Smoked beer and Dark lager. There is inate complexity going down here. Hints of dark dried fruits, molasses, dark caramel and campfire. Quite a remarkable beer.

16 ounce can. Amber gold pour. Rocky white head leaves spotty lacing. Fresh herbal hop aroma hints at citrus. Fruity, malty flavor upfront. Notes of white grape, citrus peel and earthy malt. A hint of stone fruit as well. Bitter hops on backend. Dry finish.
