Description
On Farnum Hill (and in most of the world), “ciders” are alcoholic beverages fermented from particular apples, just as "wines" are fermented from particular grapes. (Fresh apple juice is properly called “sweet cider” or – fresh apple juice.) Farnum Hill Ciders are dry (not sweet), aromatic, complex, great with plain or fancy food.

Cider apples, with their odd names and strange tannic flavors, make far better cider than fruit-bowl apples - just as wine grapes make way better wine than fruit-bowl grapes. “Bittersweet” apples (Dabinett, Ellis Bitter, Yarlington Mill, and more) help bring out a wild variety of aromas & flavors. So, many fruity, herbal, mineral, and earthy notes unfold within a pleasing tannic-acid balance.

Serve cool, not cold! Too much chilling hides the full fun of Farnum Hill aromas, flavors, and the fabulous food-friendly finish we’re so proud of.

Location: Cask at Jimmy's No 43, 9/14/09
Part of the Gotham Cask Festival

Overall Impression: Swung by Jimmy's the day after the Cask Festival ended, and this was the one remaining cask they still had going, so I figured I'd give it a sampling. An interesting cider, but not a style I'm particularly in love with. Tasty and drinkable, just not something I like to drink regularly.

Bottle. Pours with a clear yellow body and a withering white ring. Aroma of strong dry apples, light sweetness, cork and earth. Taste is bone dry with sulfur...dry, dry, dry... tannic with a touch of citrus. Bubbly, but not super lively bubbles.

Re-Rate: Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a clear golden body and no head. Funky and sharp aroma with plastic, phenolic notes, slightly sweet and very tannic. Taste is Very dry, tannic, earthy, light acidity. Mouthpuckeringly dry, high, champagne like carbonation.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for sharing. Completely clear, Bud Light, macro yellow color. Aroma is alcoholic apple, were the alcohol is just enough to be felt but not overpowering. Taste is really not sweet with just hints of cider. A very fizzy mouthfeel but works well here. Aftertaste is light granny smith. And when they say extra-dry, they really do mean it. A nice experience, I may give this cider thing more of a try.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for sharing - clear, light gold, headless cider - earthy apple skin aroma, with some white wine-ish tannins - mouth-puckering, tongue-lashing dry quality, with a hint of lambic-like wildness well contained in the background - I’d take this over champagne any day.

Thanks to JoeMcphee for this (hey, Joe, we’re finally drinking it!) - Clear golden pour, with a fizzy, but headless body (but ciders get forgiven for that) - mild, earthy aroma, with apple skins, light tannins, and a faint, background barnyard funk - lively carbonation gives a prickly mouthfeel - quite dry, with light mineral character - tart, nearly sour apple skin flavor - moderate acidity - quite champagne-like - gentle wild character - a touch of phenolics far in the background make it a little less enjoyable - otherwise a solid dry cider.

Bright, light yellow. Fresh, fruity and altogether clean aroma. Quite tart, with notes of apple skin and tannin. Bright on the palate with more apple complexity than the Semi-Dry. Very tart finish - fresh & fruity character is quenching indeed.

Dark golden colour. Lots of sparkle. Tannic apple skin aroma. Slightly earthy apple skin flavour. Full body. Light tannins in the dry, woody finish. Nice.
