About
The Verbeeck-Back brewery has been around since the end of the 19th century, when it became one of the most beloved independent breweries in the northern region of Belgium. The brewery was, is and remains a family affair: no monks or big corporations in sight. The secrets of its successes were passed on from father to son until they became fathers themselves... and so on. However, the sons of the sixties-generation had other plans. In 1966, the brewery dozed off for a short nap.

In 2015, a new generation has risen and so has the brewery. The Verbeeck-Back family bloodline was reinforced by the De Cock family. Together, they have formed the formidable, reassuringly Belgian-sounding name Verbeeck – Back – De Cock. VBDCK. This new crop of VBDCK heirs to the family tradition of Belgian quality and craft has literally been digging up history by its roots. They are ripping through the nostalgic silence with KEREL, the beer that says it all, and the transformation of the original brewery and family residence into a new place to stay.

Bottle, 5.5%. The aroma has grapefruit, but mostly it is just metallic. Cloudy dark golden colour. Big stable white head. The flavour is citric and quite yeasty. Fruity with more yeast. Yeasty finish. Fortunately, it turns more citric and fruity than yeasty after a while.

A cool burgie style bottle along with a bare, basic info label, a good start. Oh, a Belgian pale ale with an elevated abv, continuing the upward arc. Pulling duty is a New Belgium globe glass and shows me a semi-transparent, gold liquid with a thin cover of wholly white foam. The nose, some yellow fruit and alcohol. Ultimately now, the taste, well now, we are exploring new territory here. Bitter apricots, booze, hay, funk, citrus zest, medicine, some hops taste and bitterness and a burn on the way down. Really more of a cocktail than a pale ale. There are other beers that share the same attribute, DFH 120 Minute and Stanneman Silent Killer are the best examples. And I like them all and I like this brew. A breath of fresh air, compliments to the brewer for a stretch.

Bottle 33cl. present from P&E @home poured into a shaker. Clear deep amber colour, tall fluffy frothy off-white to beige head, dissipating slowly and unevenly, heavy lacing. Aroma sweet and slightly roasted malts, caramel, citrus, red apples, plum, liquorice. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, toffee, apple marmalade, orange peel, herbal notes. Medium body, oily to creamy texture, average carbonation, dry sweetbitter aftertaste, roasty, malty and earthy notes, not completely convincing as a dark IPA and more an amber ale, nice.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours a hazy golden with a small, white head. Yeasty nose, flowery. Medium body, massively phenollic, lightly sweet fruitiness and a harsh bitterness. Not really my idea of a Wit. 040922

Head reduced to small rim over dull ochre beer. Toasted malts, caramel, honey, hardly a hint of coriander. Some wheat, again toasted & honeyed malts, caramel, even a bit oxydized malts. Again the faintest hint @ coriander, preserved orangepeel. Medium bodied at least, not very carbonated, quite slick. Ho-hom. Strange wit. Many thanks to Angie!
