Description
The Verbeeck-Back brewery has been around since the end of the 19th century, when it became one of the most beloved independent breweries in the northern region of Belgium. The brewery was, is and remains a family affair: no monks or big corporations in sight. The secrets of its successes were passed on from father to son until they became fathers themselves... and so on. However, the sons of the sixties-generation had other plans. In 1966, the brewery dozed off for a short nap.

In 2015, a new generation has risen and so has the brewery. The Verbeeck-Back family bloodline was reinforced by the De Cock family. Together, they have formed the formidable, reassuringly Belgian-sounding name Verbeeck – Back – De Cock. VBDCK. This new crop of VBDCK heirs to the family tradition of Belgian quality and craft has literally been digging up history by its roots. They are ripping through the nostalgic silence with KEREL, the beer that says it all, and the transformation of the original brewery and family residence into a new place to stay.

Good, very dense & fine, stable light yellowish head over veiled golden beer with some lace. Floral nose, fresh green leaves, weeds, hops, some esters. Dry, bitterish, weeds and a meaty ester reminiscent of bacon fry. Faintly toasted, yeasty, musk. Short dry finish. Feels well-carbonated, alleviating the body. Slick. Gives a not-quite-finished impression, despite the high carbonation. OK. Thanks to Stef!

Bottle on 5th February 2022 from La Belgique Gourmande, Brussels. Pours hazy coppery amber with heavy off-white foam. Spicy grapefruit zest in aroma. Tart grapefruit to the fore in-mouth with nuttiness in the background. Both flavour foci linger in a finish leaving the drinker wanting more. Full bodied with an engaging texture.

Bottle picked up from Bier Paradjis, Maarssen nr Utrecht, Netherlands and consumed at home Wednesday 19th January 2022 listening to Steve Lamaq on 6Music and cooking Cordon Bleu Schnitzel with Rosemary Potatoes, also making an Italian Tomato Sauce and Pork and Beef Polpettes, homemade Coleslaw and Delia's Spicy Red Cabbage recipe (we're super busy). Pours gold, light gold with a light haze and a white head. Dry with a slight tart edge, honey is if anything subtle. There is a little furry rub across the roof of the mouth, not at all sweet, gets better. It's a decent.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours golden with a slight haze and a small, white head. Unusual spicy nose, reminding me somehow of Sake. Rich, full body, sweet maltiness, again somewhat spicy. But the booze is extremely dominant making this very hard to drink - combined with a bitter finish. Incomparable taste? Well, not so much.... 111121
