Description
Occidental Brewing Co. was founded in 2011 by Ben and Dan Engler with the goal of making well-balanced continental-style beers in the land of IPAs: Portland, Oregon. Finding a niche with beer drinkers who had grown tired of the hops arms race, we quickly grew (but not too much) with our lineup of approachable, sessionable, and award-winning ales and lagers. We began canning our core beers in 2013 and now bottle multiple seasonal offerings as well. Over the years we expanded our distribution from our Portland brewery to much of Oregon, Western Washington, Nevada, Idaho, and the occasional shipment to Japan. Look for Occidental beer in your local supermarket, bottle shop, bar or restaurant. Prost!

Bright amber. Not much head. Light toasty amber malts. Sweet malt without nuance. A little cracker and a little caramel. Decent...similar to the commercial alts but with a touch more yeast complexity.

Dark gold, aroma is s bit of noble and a bit of sweet pale malt...harvest time! Taste is way off...sour, grainy/husky, not enough bitterness. Nowhere near klsch and it’s not much of a golden ale either.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Dark brown color with small head; red hue. The aroma is mild, lightly fruity (apple). The mouthfeel is lean and smooth; some caramel flavor, malt, dash of chocolate, with light oxidation feeling; light residual sweetness; ordinary bitterness, with some roasted nuts in the end. Short final.
Weak Doppelbock; quite common American interpretation (although examples exist in Germany as well); not exciting, no class.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma of banana and bubblegum. Flavour brings out clove, banana, bubblegum and slight spice. Really full-bodied and flavourful. Great hef.

Muddy deep blond color with generous head. Feet smell. Smooth mouthfeel, sweetish Hefeweizen, with some banana, some cardboard, but too little spicy character, and rather short final.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Amber color, hazy, with compact head. Nice malts, both the aroma and mostly the flavor, they are a bit biscuity (cookies); dry mouthfeel; quite strong bitterness with modern and American hopping, not really classic, but well made.
Nice one.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Dark amber to mahogany color, bright and clean, with small creamy head. The aroma tends to be sweeter and more caramelly than German Dunkels. The mouthfeel is dry and rather weak; it has some caramel flavor, but it terribly lacks of depth; low bitterness somehow. It has some breadish impression.
Too simple.
