Description
Occidental Brewing Co. was founded in 2011 by Ben and Dan Engler with the goal of making well-balanced continental-style beers in the land of IPAs: Portland, Oregon. Finding a niche with beer drinkers who had grown tired of the hops arms race, we quickly grew (but not too much) with our lineup of approachable, sessionable, and award-winning ales and lagers. We began canning our core beers in 2013 and now bottle multiple seasonal offerings as well. Over the years we expanded our distribution from our Portland brewery to much of Oregon, Western Washington, Nevada, Idaho, and the occasional shipment to Japan. Look for Occidental beer in your local supermarket, bottle shop, bar or restaurant. Prost!

On tap at Stateside Craft, pours a clear yellow with a medium white head. Aroma brings out sweet cereal malt and lots of dry graininess. Flavour is fairly bland but dry for a kolsch, with grains, cereal malts and breadiness. Decently balanced and drinkable, but boring.

Draught at Stateside Craft, Vancouver
Cloudy dark amber color with creamy beige head. The Dunkel character is very moderate, the Weizen character is medium, and it’s a different take at the style, with some sweet apple flavor and aroma alongside the banana, and very light peach; low bitterness.
Not bad.

16oz can pours a clear gold with some bright white head. Nose is weird, dusty, some bright hay, some lemon, a little old couch. Flavor is lightly sweet, hay, straw, lemon, a little metal. Clean finish.

Blond color, compact small head. The aroma is fresh, a bit bready, but too light. Light mouthfeel, dry; it has a bit of straws, cereals, and very light grass. Ordinary bitterness.
Simple.

@ Portland Craft. Golden, malt accident with slight appley note. Sweetish character, bit appley, touch of alcohol late that helps it dry out. Not bad, maybe a touch sticky/gluey.

Pale golden with abundant foamy head. Aroma is mostly grains, cereal, taste is pure grain, malt, some hops present in the finish, very dry and chalky. A decent representation of the German original.

Golden color with small head. Sweet malt and corn aroma, lightly fruity, but simple eventually. Served quite cold, this seems a right temperature; it’s a rather sweet take, with mellow malt flavor, a touch of cereals, and balancing bitterness, happening to be a bit higher than a classic German Maibock, therefore also better; the hopping is delicate but modern, lightly fruity and grassy; the final has light but interesting notes of freshly baked bread.
Very nice.

Blond color, seems hazy, with small head, but nice lace. Aroma of cereals, corn husks, a bit stale. Smooth mouthfeel, almost round; a bit too sweet and without malt crispness; fairly strong bitterness but no clear sign of noble hop. The final too is sweetish, and with light fruitiness.
Funny because at the bar it’s described as Euro-pils, while it’s rather American-pils instead.

Muddy light amber-brown, banana and spice aroma, touch of bready malt. Sweet up front, but I’m catching some phenols late that I’m not liking - that burning rubber sort of thing. It’s faint, but yeah annoying,

Cloudy tan. Aroma is malty and full of banana sweetness. Sweet with light banana and a nice bit of acidity. Touch of yeasty character late.
