Description
Occidental Brewing Co. was founded in 2011 by Ben and Dan Engler with the goal of making well-balanced continental-style beers in the land of IPAs: Portland, Oregon. Finding a niche with beer drinkers who had grown tired of the hops arms race, we quickly grew (but not too much) with our lineup of approachable, sessionable, and award-winning ales and lagers. We began canning our core beers in 2013 and now bottle multiple seasonal offerings as well. Over the years we expanded our distribution from our Portland brewery to much of Oregon, Western Washington, Nevada, Idaho, and the occasional shipment to Japan. Look for Occidental beer in your local supermarket, bottle shop, bar or restaurant. Prost!

Doug Fir, Portland: pours gold with a white head. Aroma is super grainy and bready. Taste is bitter and super grassy. Probably more dirty than I would have wanted.

16 oz Can from Brewers Haven. Pale golden, nice fluffy head, streaky lacing, big, fat carbonation bubbles. Pretty. Aroma is grains with a faint whiff of some hops. Taste sticks to the plan, grainy and bready, finishing with a nice hops bite. Another nice outing from Occidental.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. Nothing too exceptional here, but the fact that they are brewing German beers true to style is pretty notable. Dark golden pour with grainy, malty aroma. Taste also reflects the malt nature, cheese and cooked vegetables. Spot on!

16 oz can from Pilgrim’s. Pours clear golden with a thick pillowy white head with excellent retention. Aroma is grainy, chalky candy, a bit lemony, basic pils. Taste is sweet and grainy, finishing with a light noble hop bitterness. Authentic--really tastes like it could be from the Czech Republic. A little too sweet for me, though.

Clear deep redish brown. Thin ring of fine beige bubbles. Not much barrel aging flavors on this rather plain malty brown beer. Lacking much of the rich nutty DB character. Plain and not very interesting

Draft at BitterCreek. After rousing success with their other faithful styles, this one’s a letdown. Malty and nutty, but kind of bland. At its core it’s true to style, but just average.
