Description

14/V/18 - 75cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared with Hendrik N. @ Hendrik's place - BB: IV/2019 (2018-701)

Clear deep orange beer, small creamy irregular off-white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: pretty malty, fruity, some banana, caramel, bit sweetish, more malts. Not much is left of the hop aroma, 1 year before the best by date... MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: malty start, grains, some caramel, bit sweetish, pretty bitter, grassy. Aftertaste: soft bitterness, malty, fruity, some ripe apples and pears.

3 May 2018. Bottle at Stokerij, Ghent. Cheers to Anke's birthday!
Pours clear amber with a lasting, small, foamy, tan head; litlle lacing; hazy with the deposit. Strong aroma of raisin (if ever a beer smelled of raisin...), butterscotch, candied fruit, dough, dried dark fruit, herbs & tea leaves. It tastes medium fruity sweet, hints of raisin & dough, and light roasted & herbal bitter, some burnt caramel. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering fruit impressions. Medium body, thin syrupy texture, fizzy carbonation. A bit underwhelming but okay.

Pours hazy dark golden/amber with a lasting, small, foamy, off-white head; some lacing and sediment. Atypical aroma of white bread & white sugar, honey, citrus, yeast, dough, spices. It tastes medium to heavy malty sweet, hints of honey and dough, on the verge of cloying but countered by a light spicy bitterness. Dry & spicy but overall malty finish, a bit metallic. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Unusual Tripel, rather sweet, but interesting.

Taste is medium full , some maltyness (white bread) . mild rough edge, almost metallic. bit overripe apples, bit doughy( by the malts ). Bit yeasty. Ends rather bombastic ( heavy malty + esthers ) . medium low bitterness. Decent, not great. mild DMS backnote

The 2016 edition of this Belgian IPA, apparently making use of all the hop varieties grown by De Plukker. From a 75 cl bottle shared with the girlfriend at De Planck in Ghent. Medium thick, foamy and frothy, papery lacing, egg-white, stable head over a hazy peach blonde beer with amberish tinge. Aroma of dried orange zest, apricot, pear, fresh kitchen herbs (basil?), wet peanuts, very dark honey, aniseed, caramel, pineapple, hay. Estery-fruity onset, peachy with notes of pineapple and banana, sharp and somewhat numbing (over)carbonation, sourish accent, bready and bit 'fluffy' malt sweetness with a caramelly edge; herbal and spicy, earthy hop bitter finish, phenolic and estery yeasty like the earlier editions of the same beer, with clove- and anise-like impressions mingling with the hayish, floral, grassy and slightly citrus peel-like aspects of the hops; malt sweetness lingers, highlighted by a subtle alcohol glow. I will not go into the discussion about Belgian attempts at IPA being too yeasty again, this is a fine beer like the other editions, just do not expect a clean, tropical American style hop bomb, rather a very decent, interesting, earthy Belgian ale with above average hopping - and in that respect, this works perfectly fine for me.
