Description

330ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, amber colour with small to average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Sweet-ish, minimally strachy, malty aroma, fruity and minimally floral hoppy overtones, some yeasty fruitiness as well, hints of honey, mandarine. Taste is sweet-ish, pale and slightly caramel malty, slightly fruity hoppy, minimally diluted hints of honey, some mandarine, orange. Watery texture, minimally dry palate, medium, mildly prickly carbonation. Nicely hopped, light and fairly refreshing, not much complexity, not overly Bock-ish - decent.

Beer now brewed by Grutte Pier in Frisia (Netherlands) for a restaurant in its capital Leeuwarden, called Spiegelaar; apparently this is already a restyled and less strong version of a precursor executed at Brouwdok before Grutte Pier took over. Thanks to Craftmember for sharing. Eggshell-white, moussey, regularly shaped, medium sized, stable head on a hazy ochre-tinged apricot blonde beer. Aroma of ripe apricots, peach jam, field flowers like sweetclover, brioche bread, minerals, hints of orange cut ‘à vif’, ginger powder, meadowsweet, fresh nutmeg and a very faint and inoffensive touch of iron (ferrous spring water). Fruity onset, quite vivid and colourful with a bright ‘yellow-orange’ fruitiness hinting at apricot, pineapple, ripe yellow plum, Doyenné pear and a bit of mandarin, sweetish only in its esteriness but low in residual sugariness; soft carb, soft and supple, somewhat powdery mouthfeel. Mellow white-bready and brioche-bready middle, a tad cake-like here and there but never becoming too sweet, finished with a refined, delicate but effective floral hop bitter element, turning meadowsweet- and clover-like retronasally. This is, by all standards, an ordinary ‘Belgian style’ blonde, but an utterly well-balanced, rather delicate and very elegant one – a finesse and grace many more ‘commercial’ blonde ales in the Low Countries can learn from. Much better than expected, to be frank.
