Description
Twin Sails Brewing joined Port Moody’s “Brewers Row” late in 2015, opening right next door to Yellow Dog. The name of the brewery refers to its founders, identical twin brothers, as well as the common sight of sailboats that can be seen on the waters of the Burrard Inlet right out front of the brewery. Twin Sails focuses on progressive American IPAs and stouts and have recently implemented a wild barrel program. They are always trying to push the boundaries of what can be done with beer in BC. Quality comes first and foremost, but in the end, it’s just a bunch of guys and girls having way too much fun brewing beer.

Opaque, pale purple. No head. tart, some blackberry, light plum. Would like more of that plum, actually. But this just clunks. Nothing all that good and none of it comes together.

335 ml can. Pours a chestnut brown with full head. Aromas of nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, ginger and biscuity malts. Flavors follow same. Thin. If one is going to add all these spices the base beer needs to be bigger IMHO.

355 ml can. Pours a very dark brown with moderate tannish head. Aromas of cola, banana peal and roasted malts. Flavors of bitter almost vegetal banana leaf, powdery chocolate and toasted malts. Initial yuck reaction followed by light banana and creamy chocolate.

Poured from 473mL can. Very dark brown with beige head. Mainly just a simple roasted malt stout, feint chocolate, maybe some brine only on the nose, simple, decent.

The ingredients list and "contains shellfish" don't exactly reconcile, but if I was a vegan or allergic to shellfish I'd err on the side of caution with this one. Unless it's worth dying and/or violating one's morals for. Let's find out!

It's black, with a thin head. The aroma is quite toasty, with a light coffee accent. Like a medium roast of low grade Ethiopian coffee. I appreciate it when the Circle K tries to do a cool coffee, but they aren't actually capable.

There's also some chocolatey stuff here, too. It's a lighter stout, a touch on the sweet side, with more of a nutty, chocolatey accent. Probably shells used, no brine. The finish mostly sweet, with similar moderate complexity. Not bad, but not worth compromising what one stands for in order to tick it.

355mL can, pours a muddy dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma smells like banana cola – like the second runnings of the shitty imperial banana stout from last year, but without the barrel. Flavour is very light, with plenty of cola and unpleasant banana puree. Totally lifeless body, with a very unpleasant banana character. Embarrassing product.

355mL can. Pours dark brown with an off-white head. Marshmallow banana, chocolate, and a weird malt character on the nose. Flavour is thin, fake marshmallow bananas, rice paper malts. Mouthfeel is thin and oily. This is sad, I don't understand why the brewery would release this.

On tap the Magnet, pours an opaque dark muddy orange with a small white head. Aroma has some car exhaust, chalkiness, and stone fruit pith. Flavour is muddy, with pithy stone fruits, chalkiness, and a touch of dankness. Pithy, fruity and muddy. Not a disaster but not good.

Can, Legacy. Hazy, dullish sort of colour, like a dirty blonde sort of thing. The aroma is full of mango and pineapple, with a bit of underlying yeastiness. Full body, but just a light bitterness that showcases a slightly grapefruity element. It's always pretty funny to drink an IPA where the type of hop doesn't matter that much, but this particular grapefruit note blends fairly well with the pineapple and mango accents. This has a bit of yeast, a touch of alcohol, but mostly just a lot of fruitiness, and mellow hop character. I like it - not sure I'd use the term IPA in any form, but it's definitely a tasty strong fruit ale. Re-rate, May 10th. I have upgraded the score from 3.4 to 3.7, because I've found myself buying it, drinking it and enjoying it. On the first pass, it was fine, but there's something that is drawing me to this beer. It's probably the way that the fruit is gently integrated that's the key.
