Description

Bottle shared by a friend, medium sample. Cloudy golden color, short frothy head. Aroma of loads of fresh ginger, some woody smoke, bit spicy, slight grainy malt. The ginger is very present and a bit overwhelming even, but still it does not become annoying and the smoked wood notes balance it out. Also, lots of ginger in taste, slight alcohol. Feels like a tripel with loads of ginger and a bit of smoked wood to balance. I actually quite liked the experiment and would be able to finish the whole bottle. Wouldnt buy it again, but would like another glass.

Ginger beer from Groningen, received as a gift from Craftmember’s family, big cheers for that. Moussy, medium thick, egg-white head over a lightly hazy peach blonde beer with orangey hue. Aroma strongly dominated by dried ginger powder and even gari (candied ginger), covering impressions of apricot, chamomile, dry grass, pear, toasted white bread, strawberry, vague iron somewhere. Crisp, refreshing onset, some restrained fruitiness, low sweetness and very soft sourishness, hints of peach, pineapple, slight banana and gooseberry, minerally and slightly ’souring’, spritzy carbonation (perhaps a tad overcarbonated even), supple and slick body, some graininess quickly gaining a nutty edge, lightly toasted, spiciness apparent from the start but increasing towards the finish with a strong, dominating dried and / or candied ginger effect retronasally, bit resinous, somewhat peppery as well, very aromatic and actually blending well with a grassy, earthy hop bitterish touch, while thin malt sweetishness continues throughout. I have no idea if this was the first ginger beer in the Netherlands but in any case it does remind me of the - stronger - De Graal Gember in Belgium, but in comparison, it lacks some of the fruitiness of that one, making it a bit of a one-trick pony: you will hate this if you do not like ginger. May pair well with ginger-spiced dishes, I suppose, and technically this is certainly okay, so not bad for what it intends to be.

Bottle @ home. Clear orange color, medium to full sized white head that lasts for a decent while and leaves fair lacing. Aroma is citrussy, citruspeel, yeast, dark grapes. Taste is about the same: malts, dark grapes again, yeast, after a while some herbs or spices come through. Medium body, decent carbonation. Ok beer, but in the end the herbs and spices come through which I don’t really like.

Bottle @ home. Dark brown color, perhaps slightly red-brown, medium to full sized beige head. Smell and taste malts, sweetness, quite some alcohol. In fact, it’s so alcoholic it actually bothers me which doesn’t happen to me that often. Hmm weird, perhaps I’m only imagining it. Some caramel, a hint of raisins, a slight fruitpeel bitter hint in the finish. Decent body, medium carbonation. Hmm I don’t know about this one, it’s not that there’s anything obviously wrong with it, but I just don’t like it very much.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ Wildervanker Bouwerij Pitch black with a tiny tan head. Malty aroma with a hint of smoke and some hops. And of course the usual coffee and chocolate notes. Nice creamy taste and mouthfeel. A very pleasant solid stout.
