Description
Hornbeer is a farmhouse brewery founded in the beginning of 2008 by Gunhild and Jorgen Fogh Rasmussen. The first brewery was very small, brewing only 300 liter batches. But end of July 2008 the brewery burnt down to the ground. Now Gunhild and Jorgen had to start again from scratch. In January 2009 the new brewery started operations. Nowadays the production is around 2000 hl/year. Hornbeer is well known for a very different assortment. Hornbeer´s philosophy is that the beers should be distinctive but still very drinkable.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of yespr. Very hazy reddish brown with a rough, beige head. Very spicy, gingery nose. Quite full-bodied with roasted malts, again spicy - cloves and coriander. Rather subdued bitterness. 311008

cloudy dark amber, lage thick offwhite head. aroma is clearly hoppy, but stil refreshing and flowerlike and piny, not overdone as some other iipa’s. flavor : hoppy, slightly sweet, bitter, bitterness strongest in the middle, the end is slightly sweeter. This is better tasting than most IPA’s i’ve had. reminds me a little of Ølfabrikken rug ipa, although far from as sweet as that one.

Bottle at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. A hazy, orange beer with a beige head. Fluor notes, pine cones and malty sweetness in the aroma. Malty-sweet in the mouth, full-bodied with a good piney and citrusy hoppyness. Long hoppy finish with a fine bitterness. An easy to drink IPA that I would like slightly more fruity. Besides that, I like the hop profile. (080912)

Bottle at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. A hazy, orange-amber beer with a beige head. A bit anonymous aroma with smoke playing the leading role and malty sweetness and caramel supporting. Sweet and malty flavor with some fruity notes and a smoke profile much more gentle than in the aroma. Probably too gentle. Medium to full body, almost sticky sweet. Long, sweet finish. There seems to be a little touch of DMS in it too. Far from a bad beer, but it didn’t impress. (080912)

Bottle at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. It pours a slightly unclear golden body and a small off-white head. Malty and sweetish nose with caramel and a good dose of hops. Caramel-sweet flavor with some hops giving citrus and pine, as well as some bitterness. Full body. Sweet, umami-ish finish with nice hoppy bitterness. Nice one, dangerously quaffable, and it hides the alcohol very well. Rating: 7-4-7-4-15-3.7. (080912)

Bottle, at Copenhagen Beerfestival. It serves an unclear, brown body with an orange tint. Decent beige head on top. Nicely hopped nose, citrusy, resiny and slightly dusty, with alcohol, sweetness, caramel and a roasted hint. Sugary, sweet, pale-malty flavor with dried fruits, some caramel and enough hops to cope with the malty flavors. Resin, citrus, pinecones and bitterness. Warming, full-bodied, and maybe a bit sticky-sweet in the mouth. Lasting finish with bitterness and sweetness blending nicely, and the bitterness lasting longer than the sweetness. A nice barley wine. (090516)

Bottle at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. As their Russian imperial stout, it pours a beautiful black body under a tan head. A bit smaller head than the RIS, but still looking cute. Some alcohol to support the coffee, chocolate and roasted malt in the aroma. The flavor is roasted, with a slight sour touch in the finish. Else there’s lots of coffee and chocolate. Full body. Long sweet finish. A nice beer indeed, but almost challenging to drink. I still think I love it. (080912)

Bottle at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. A cute looking black beer with a tan head. Coffee, roasted malt and chocolate in the aroma. A bit too weak I think. The flavor has chocolate, coffee, sugar, some hoppy fruityness and a good hoppy bitterness. Sweet and roasted finish. Full-bodied and with a dryish feeling even though it’s quite sweet. A nice and pleasant beer, but for an imperial stout these days, it gets a bit anonymous. Rating: 7-5-7-4-15-3.8. 080912

Bottle, shared by Meilby. A black body is topped by a small, dense, tan head. Molasses, coffee, roasted malts, slightly burnt actually, and alcohol on the nose. A bit sweet in the mouth maybe, with coffee, molasses and coffee-style bitterness. Smooth, warming and full-bodied, finishing with alcohol, roasted malts, coffee and coffee bitterness. Lovely, really pleased to have this again. 110114
