Description
Preparations for Leidsch Bier started in 2003. Before that, owner / brewer JW Fukkink had been active as an amateur beer brewer since 2000. The official start was a fact with the introduction of Leidsch Blond in April 2004. With the move to own business premises (mid 2010) and obtaining the brew / excise permit (May 2011), there was finally a real beer brewery in Leiden again.

Tap at De Paas, Den Haag. Poured a cloudy dark mahogany colour with a frothy tan head. The aroma is yeast fruit and alcohol. The flavour is alcoholic bitter which lingers well into the finish. The fruit reminds me of kirsch. A liquid Black Forest gateaux perhaps.

Tap at the Den Haag beer fest 2013. Poured a hazy medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is a yeast malt and a little fruit. The flavour is medium bitter, big yeast and a strong liqourice alcoholic flavour develops on the palate and in the finish.

Bottled. Pretty much gushing, probably because of the amount of yeast. Thank god, the yeast is flocculating quite well, so not much ends up in my glass. Dark brown color, huge brown head. Aroma of coffee and chocolat, dark fruit. Soft woody notes, slight herbal. Hint of lactose. Dry and bitter taste, soft milky note (maybe some lactose was used?), hint of sourness. Slight alcohol in the finish, with a soft metallic note as well. There are some minor flaws in the beer, but overall the recipe seems pretty solid.

Bottle shared with deanso. Poured a dark reddish amber with a thick frothy off white head. The aroma is weak spicy with fruit. The flavour is medium bitter with spicy red berries and a Co2 style sharp bitterness on the palate. A really unique and super special Christmas beer.

Bottle from ABC Beers, den Haag. Poured a deep mahogany colour with a frothy tan head and some broken lace. The aroma is earty, dry and a little smoky. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with some big liqourice, roasted malt and dark chocolate. That bitterness really does hit the palate and stays there a while. The finish however is somewhat smooth and the malty chocolate aftertaste is quite divine! Quite a special beer from such a small brewer.

Draught at the Holiday Inn, Leiden. A slightly hazy amber with a tight white head; yeasty aroma with a touch of citrus; nicely weighted caramel malt body with some orangy fruit; and a satisfying finish. Really rather good.
