Description
The Cromarty Brewing Co is a family run business consisting of Craig, Chap and Jenni Middleton. Craig, our fanatical founding brewer studied the science of brewing at Heriot Watt University and the art of beer making in the student accommodation and flat basements. After finishing the course he went on to do some work in various breweries to gain valuable experience. It was during this time that he decided he wanted to get his own beers to market.
In the spring of 2011 construction of the brewery started on the shed works and some awesome stainless steel was ordered from Bavarian Brewery Technologies. Hectic times and long hours later led to the first of the casks rolling out on the 19th December 2011.

Keg, can and bottle. Dark brown body with a beige head that holds well. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of blackcurrant, treacle, blueberry and meaty malts. Flavour of Black Jack sweets, Marmite, chocolate, flat Coca-Cola and plum. Medium body with a smooth mouthfeel. Light fizz. A rich, complex black IPA - one of the best I’ve tasted. Cromarty are such an excellent, underrated brewery.

Cans from Cork & Cask (2022) and Great Grog (2026). Clear ruby body with a thick beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of smoked malt and raisin. Flavour of cranberry, smoked malt and rust. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. It’s good but knowing what Cromarty are capable of, I’m a little disappointed. It’s perhaps a touch heavy on the smoked malt.

Cans from Cork & Cask and Great Grog. Hazy golden/amber body with a white head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of pineapple, Jelly Babies, honey and mango yoghurt. Flavour of caramel, pine, marmalade, dried apricot and boozy orange. Medium body with a chewy, sticky mouthfeel. Soft fizz. An intense, hop-heavy DIPA that’s a bit in the sweet side.

Can picked up at their market stall at Ellon Castle winter market. It pours rich russet - brown with a medium beige head. The aroma is toasty grains, cereal, nutty, brown bread, ryvita, dull caramel, cola and some dried fruits. The taste is crisp, dry, light bitterness, toasty, nutty, slightly charred edge, roasty malts, brown bread, earth, ryvita, caramel, cola and a touch of dried fruits. Finish is dry and toasty. Light body (but not thin) and moderate, foamy carbonation. Nice take on a classic, but now rare style. Enjoyable.

Bottle from Against The Grain. Hazy brown body with a beige head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of strawberry syrup, oak and caramel. Flavour of plum, strawberry and a subtle hint of bourbon. Medium body with a chewy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A sweet and well rounded imperial red ale (or barley wine?) Loved this.
