Description
It all started with a humble homebrew kit and the drive to make better beer. Tired of the same bland and dated choices everywhere, Air Force friends Eric Wallace and Dick Doore set out to make the kind of beer that excited them; beer they wanted to drink. A hobby quickly became an obsession and it wasn't long before Left Hand Brewing opened for business on January 22, 1994. Left Hand has steadily increased its production, making the Brewers Association’s Top 50 Craft Brewers list in 2012.

16oz can from Boise Co-op. Dark brown nitro pour, silky, creamy beige head. Aroma is cinnamon and cardamom, savory, snickerdoodles. Taste lightens up on the cinnamon, allowing some sweet milky flavors through . Cardamom appears at the finish to provide a nice savory bite. Creamy, velvety feel with very mild bitterness.

Can from House of Trembling Madness. Pours black with small beige to tanned top. Aroma is roasty with dark fruits, coffee, dust, dried nuts, touch sweet and rich demerara sugar. Taste is surprisingly sweeter than expected, still roasty and bitter but with prunes, toffee, light treacle, touch of dark berry, coffee, caramel, aniseed. Some chocolate but interestingly other flavours dominate despite the use of this malt. Guess that means a good layer of flavour. Nice balance too. Medium bodied, semi-dry, fine carbonation. Good mouthfeel and compliments the style well. Excellent.

Notes from 11/21/2008. Twelve ounce tulip at the Blind Tiger for their VSK night; '07 stuff. The color & clarity of gold rum, with an inch plus of unexpected off-white spritzy head. Powerful notes of bark & leather, piercing through my nostrils like wood stain. The alcohol was potent, & saturating, fuming up vanilla & reminding me of something like harsh scotch. Aside from everything I smelled, actually tasting it brought out moments of charcoal & cigarette smoke, a grassy bitterness, along with some notion of fruit(like unripe cherries), & sharp malt. Rigid alcohol in every sip that helps accentuate the mild fruitiness, but it hurts just a little too much for what is/was a supposed 10%ABV. Body was more in line with what I expected. Slightly syrupy with mild carbonation, it coats & lingers. Stiff & a little difficult for something aged, it still wasn't half bad. Maybe not worth repeating anytime soon with so much else out there. A half pour would of done me just fine.

Pours black with a lingering tan head. It smells of dark roast malt and piney hops. The moderately bitter flavor has dark roast malt, chocolate, and piney hops. Medium bodied. Very good.

Bottle: Yellow hazy brew with ginger, this must be a heavy "Ginger Ale", but i’m not very fond of it must try it later for a re-rate.
