Tasting at Papsoe
Hazy amber color. It really smells like Bloody Mary: tomato, spices and light celery; I forget that it’s supposed to be beer, the aroma is nice. Some caramel flavor, medium-low sweetness, quite strong hopping, with a good pepper presence. I’m usually against these mixes, but I have to admit that this one is an interesting experience. If it was not so bitter at the end it would be better.

750 ml. Brewed 6-7-06. Bottled 2-5-07. Black pour with appealing dark brown, frothy head, mostly diminishing. The aroma has lots of dark, semi-sweet chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, licorice and raspberry. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter and then shows some fruity, cherry tartness. Dry, too. Enough bitter/tartness to mute the sweet chocolate. Medium bdoy wtih a watery texture, but turns slightly chalky — perhaps a characteristic of its age. Lively carbonation. This beer is like a liquid raspberrry-coffee truffle. Very enjoyable. Nicely crafted.

Thanks again to tpd975. This is my first Shorts Brewing beer. Pours dark brown with amber and copper edges to go along with a light brown head. The aroma is wood, bourbon, vanilla and a sliver of caramel. The taste begins with a quick pulse of sweet malts, a hint of roasted malts and caramel. Then wood and bourbon rise up followed by a note of vanilla. Tasty stuff but for me it is balanced a little too much on the side of the barrel flavors. Just by a bit though.

All hails to mighty tpd975 for making my 600th review a good one. Pours black with tan head. Aroma has plenty of the bourbon nose, rich but remains very subtle and light. Taste, lots of roastiness, chocolate malts and light hints of bourbon. The overall mouthfeel is very enjoyable and leaves an aftertaste almost mocha. I really could not pick up any bitterness or tartness. This is definitely a new and interesting twist to Schwarzbier. Thumbs up.

Bottle. Spicy vanilla aroma, some alcohol. Hazy red orange colour. The flavour starts off with a little rough bitter fruitiness, but not bad. Turns to sweeter fruits. Some red berries, berry tea, citrus, orange. Swelling mouthfeel. Good citrus flavour.

Thanks to mibirder for this - pours a dark brown, nearly black, with a small tan head - the aroma is mostly dark chocolate, with some very mild anise underneath, and a slight doughy character - smooth, medium bodied - the flavor chocolate heavy, with hints of roast - the licorice flavor works well underneath this, and never becomes too powerful - the mint is present at the back, and plays off the licorice very well - that doughiness is there at the back again, making it a little less enjoyable, but this is quite nice.

On tap at HopCat, Grand Rapids. Murky apricot-brown body, thin off-white head. Strong banana aroma. Surprisingly dry body, with heavy emphasis on bananas. Sharp, crisp bite, and notes of alcohol and cocoa. Too dry and bitter, but interesting.

75 cL bottle. Pours hazy orange to deep amber with a fully gone head. Dry and spiced aroma. Caramel and slight wooden. Warming bourbon flavoured with a solid wooden note. Smooth roasted malty and bourbon finish.
