Strong blonde Belgian ale by Keukenbrouwers, from the familiar steinie bottle, found in my cellar without having a clue where I bought it. Slow gusher, but being familiar with opening bottled Hip Hops, I was prepared and managed to pour the beer without a drop spilt. Very thick, foamy, frothy head, egg-white and coarse, irregularly shaped and leaving thick patches of lacing on the edge of the glass; pure, warm golden blonde robe with 'old gold' hue, lightly hazy with dots of translucent yeast bits floating around everywhere, more equally misty and a bit more ochre-ish with sediment. Aroma of freshly cut ripe Doyenné pear, apricot jam, lots of banana and even bubblegum, 'appeljenever', very sweet ripe orange flesh, meringue, raw pineapple, sweetbread, calvados, candy apple, hints of powder sugar, honey liqueur, gari, cloves, dough and some very light but inoffensive, onsetting oxidation. Very spritzy onset, strongly numbing overcarbonation stinging on the tongue, very minerally, smothering basic fruitiness of bubblegummy banana ester, sugared apple and pear, peach and pineapple, adding sourness to what is basically a very sweet main flavour with a thick load of honeyish residual sugar weighing on a smooth, pale malt and white bread sweetish core; light spicy phenols in the end mingle with the residual sugariness and malt sweetness, finishing in only very light, subtly floral hoppiness incapable of delivering enough 'body' to the finish. Ends with a lot of residual white candi syrup sweetness - of the incompletely fermented kind - combined with still tingling minerally carb, a very vague background hint of oxidation, late earty hop bitterishness and, unsurprisingly, a notably warming, wry, eventually rather obnoxious calvados- and 'jenever'-like alcohol effect. I was expecting way worse, to be completely honest, but all things considered, this is clearly a Duvel imitation - or tribute - with, contrary to the real thing, much more residual sweetness than it can handle. A 'headbanger' indeed, the beer I'll hold responsible for the hangover that awaits me tomorrow, with its drinkability impaired not only by too much lingering sweetness and astringent alcohol, but also by harsh overcarbonation. Once again a failed attempt at rivalling the famous Duvel, I'd say.
