Description
Salopian Brewery first brewed in Shrewsbury in 1995. Founded by Martin Barry on the site of the old Onions Dairy and like many breweries the kit we first brewed on was small and rudimentary at only two barrels. Brewing ceased in late 1997 due to financial problems. Our chairman Wilf Nelson joined the brewery in 1998 – Wilf coming on board gave the brewery much needed stability and vision to move to forward and brewing recommenced in January 1998.

Slowly, as cash flow permitted, we upgraded our brewing kit and replaced rusty dented vans with slightly less rusty dented vans. It was the onset of brewing a more eclectic range of cask ale, whilst embracing both traditional styles and those of our locality. 2014 saw the brewery make its final move – we hope! – to the village of Hadnall on the outskirts of Shrewsbury.

[Cask at The Evening Star, Brighton] A yelllow beer with no head. The aroma is sweet malty. And the flavor is malty and sour from some bad hop sort.

This is the first product I have encountered from this brewery. +++Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle the beer poured a black color with a minimal brown head. The aroma was light and had notes of sour malt. The flavor was dry, roasty and had a chocolate element and a hint of coffee. Relatively dry overall. A rather basic and uninspiring porter.

Huh, huh huh, entire butt, huh huh. Okay, now that that is out of the way, this is a pretty decent porter. Nice, dark tan appearance, and a roasted malt aroma that invites you to drink. Toffee and coffee in the flavor, with a nice, roasty finish. The body is slightly thin, and, as Ringo pointed out, with 14 malts I expected a little more from this beer, but it is still a tasty, easy-drinking porter.

Rerate 1/30/03: As one of the first Porters I tried, I was really impressed with this beer. Since then I have had several better Porters and I am adjusting my review of this beer accordingly. 12/30/01 (4.5): Who knew something with the word 'butt' in it could taste so good. The hint of coffee and caramel almost make you think you bought one of those fancy iced coffee drinks, except this makes you drunk! Foamy goodness.

Dark brown with a foamy white head. Clean, malty aroma with definite chocolate notes...slightly winey. Somewhat sharp mouthfeel, yet low carbonation. Sweetish, malty, with a slight caramel note. Mild alcohol burn in the finish. Very slight roasted flavors. Definite complexity to the malt profile here.

Jumps out at you with impressive coffee and brown malt (14 are used) aromas. The palate is rich and espresso-like - very robust - with a full, creamy mouthfeel. In some circles the terms ‘porter’ and ‘stout’ are considered interchangeable. Salopian brewery must be one of those circles.
