Tap at Cross Scythes, Sheffield. Just about black. Tan, thin, lasting head. Dark fruit chocolate truffle. Vanilla. Sweet, ripe, dark fruit. Hint of roast coffee. Taste is fruitcake sweet. Then a big roast dryness. Roast bitterness at the end. Sweetness remains in the background, though. A light saltiness in there, too. Long, dark chocolate, bitter finish. And all at ยฃ4 a pint!! Beautiful.

On tap at yhe Stockbridge Tap. Appearance - just about opaque black but there is a small chink of red light appearing on the edges. Nose - roastiness plus black chocolate and hazelnuts. Taste - oh itโs honeycomb and chocolate. Crunchie bar again. Palate - medium bodied and dry in texture. The finish is dry and pretty elegant. Overall - lovely beer. I think the roastiness would define this as a stout or even dry stout though.

Earl Of Essex. Cask. Almost clear gold beer, small bubbly white head. Palate is light and semi dry. Mild fine carbonation. Smooth pale malt, light touch of sweetness. Hops are quite pithy bitter but have a touch of juicy fruits. Bare whisper of esters. Semi dry finish with a touch of lemon and grapefruit marmalade. Not bad.
