Description
Looking for the real taste of Antwerp? Since 1833, there has been just one address: our Antwerp City Brewery. Because when people get together in Antwerp, they do so more often than not with a Bolleke Koninck in their hand. And that’s how De Koninck has become synonymous with Antwerp –and vice-versa. Every day, we work hard to uphold this proud tradition while also experimenting on ways to perfect and reinvent the taste of Antwerp.

28/IV/18 - shared @ Zythos Bierfestival 2018 (Leuven) - BB: n/a (2018-524) Thanks to the ratebeer crew for sharing today's beers!

Clear dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, falls down quickly. Aroma: very oxidized, port notes, madeira, old beer, like more than 20 years old oxidized and dusty stuff, some cinnamon. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very oxidized, cardboard, alcohol, dusty, more oxidation. Really don't like this one. Seems like it's been aged for way too long. Probably because they've tasted it on several occasions, and each time they tried waiting longer till it would turn out good? News flash, tequila barrel ageing never turns out good. :p At least not with the beers I've had so far. ;-)

Crisp as a cracker.

16/IV/18 - 33cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent), shared @ home - BB: III/2018 (2018-458)

Clear blond beer, big aery irregular off-white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very oxidized, Madeira, port, lots of dried orange peel, bit soapy, fruity touch, overripe banana. Where's my brett? I aged this bottle for 3 years, because the label said the brett would mean the beer would keep evolving in the bottle. Seems to me like not much happened, except just a lot of oxidation. I claim shenanigans, I'm pretty sure this beer was pasteurised after bottling! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of orange peel, some alcohol, very oxidized, sweetish, overripe fruits. Aftertaste: more oxidation, orange peel, bit fruity. Brett my ass!

Tap at the brewery. Thnx Sven and Sam ! Pours black, nearly no head, but tanned as long as it's alive. Smell is intense, spices, sweet, bit booze. Taste is big on spice-from-barrel, too much tequilla here for me. The body and carbo remain an attractive feature, but much of the beer's base is lost in the intense barrel notes. might make a good base for backblending, but as it is now, it's way to much barrel.

Glass from tap at the brewery. Thnx Sam and Sven ! Pours black, minor but dark head. Smell is intense, barrel, bourbon, tad sweet, roasty, full. Taste is likewise. Perhaps a tad to much barrel notes here, but a pleasant beer nevertheless. Thick body, low carbo,... All is in place here. Perhaps just a bit too boozy for me.
