Japan has many Kokutou Sweet Stouts but I am pretty Sankt Gallen’s was the first. Served in my stout glass. I haven’t had this 6.5% beer in year’s but it was part of the Valentine’s set so I am revisiting it. It’s now part of SanktGallenBrewery / 元祖地ビール屋 サンクトガーレン ’s core line up and pours a cola brown with a thick beige head of foam.

The aroma is sugary sweet, molasses & chocolate buns. The taste is solid sweet dark sugar, molasses and dark sweet bread. Not a stout to knock your socks off but a decent one to chill out with on a rainy Sunday evening.

Bottle from Tanakaya. Pours a deep brown with a finger of beige head that dissipates fairly quickly. Some roasted malts, dark chocolate and a very faint raspberry and strawberry aroma that seemed to dissipate as it warms. Body feels a little thin, but still hides the abv well. Light tartness on the palate with some dryness on the finish. Lingering, light berries on the finish after some light roastiness. OK I guess and not awful.

1.8L bottle from the brewery shared at Owl & Pussycat Kitchen in Busan. It pours a lightly opaque straw gold with a bready fruity aroma. The taste is very dry featuring cracker malts and herbal hops. Nice but the dark was better. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from Isetan. Orange-amber pour, hazy, with a tall, bubbly head. Piney, citrus nose, with some rich malts almost like a bock. A bit pissy as well. Piny hops, big time pine, resinous. Some grass, a bit of citrus. Mostly pine resins. A bit of caramel malt, something like Munich. Too much pine. Medium body, a bit lazy. Overall not bad, but not at all interesting and they do much better usually.

Thanks jinroh for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing dark translucent brown with no head and barely any carbonation. The nose shows dry notes of brett and sweet notes. The palate is full bodied and low carbonation. Good funky sweetness of dry oak and vanilla (?). Slight bitterness at the end. Definitely the funkiest flavor I’ve had in a beer.

On tap at Craft Beer Holiday. Sankt Gallen Maya Lemon Ale 5% A clear deep gold pour with a bright peppery lemon aroma. Zesty carbonation on a mes-light body. The taste is candyish lemon zest & wheat. Actually quite an interesting fruit beer.
