In 1998, the brewery was acquired by Jos Tjoen, who modernised it so that it could expand. It soon became clear that the premises were too small for the planned extension and so, in 2001, he moved Brouwerij De Bie to a larger location in Loker but kept the name: Hellekapelle. And an entirely new brewery was born, one with an adjoining pub where people could enjoy a good chat with close friends over great beer. At the same time, they opened a beer boutique.
Because of the enormous success of regional craft beers, this location was soon far too small. So, in 2011, Brouwerij De Bie moved to a much larger farmstead in Wakken (Dentergem). What began as a craft brewery with 3 beers has today grown into a renowned brewery with 10 beers. But it hasn’t lost its artisanal qualities.

Bottle, pours black with a dark tan head. Smells very sweet, honey, syrup, and buttermilk. Taste is too sweet to taste anything but sugar. Wow, I can’t finish it, drainpour

(33cl bottle) Hazy, amber colour with a big and slowly lacing off-white foamy head. Sweet malty and spicy-fruity aroma of orange zest, anise and coriander. Sweet flavour, medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Solid, toast-malty and zesty fruity base with well-rounded spicy notes; almost dry, malt-accented and moderately spicy finish. Pretty rounded stuff (23.08.08).

(33cl bottle) Hazy, golden coloured hue with loads of micro particles and a medium-sized foamy white head. Sweet and moderately fruity (grapes, citrus) nose with vanilla and coriander spice. Sweet flavour, medium to full bodied with a rather soft carbonation. Malt-accented, moderately fruity and quite plain taste for a Belgian beer of that strength; sweet malty and strong metallic finish with notes of anise and coriander in the aftertaste (23.08.08).

Bottle at Delirium, Gothenburg. My first meeting with de Bie turned out very nice. After first trying to order another beer, which was out of stock, I just chose the next on the list, and got this pleasant surprise. It poured a hazy golden body with a lot of microfloatings and topped by a big, dense off-white head. The aroma gives a little sourish impression, is roasted and sweet, with dark berries and spicees. Really malty on the palate, with roasted and sweet maltyness, a little sourish touch, lots of dark berries and some spicyness. Full-bodied and sweetish, with a lasting, herbal-bitter finish. I have a hard time setting the score for this beer, I would like to give it 7.5 on both aroma and flavor, but since that’s not an option, I go for a 7 and an 8. In search of! (080710)
