Can, July 2007. Very light amber with a strong light orange tint. Looks thin. High, fine, white head. Aroma of amber malt, not very strong. Slightly sweet. Flavor of amber malt, yeast, and a touch of barnyard, though much more like a Belgian than the biere de garde I had in France. A very nice, strong, roasted malt, hay, and hops finish. The finish is the most impressive part. This is a nice, dry beer, with a good bit of the earthy taste I am used to in the type. A bit lighter than I remember the style, and a good deal more bitter in the finish as well. An excellent beer.

Can. Very hoppy aroma, malt is a bit thin. Some citrus in those American hops. flavor shows up a littl more malt, but still it is a little watery. Decent hops, for sure, but comes across more like a light bitter. A bit too thin. Not a bad beer overall, but not near as good as the 18th Century IPA that is seems to have replaced. Balance is lacking. (I’m not angry that it comes in cans, even though this one IS a bit metallic. the price is great for Japan).

From the can. Plain looking, no real interest in the nose, which is malt-centered but lacks complexity and has no hops to speak of. Reasonably good caramel malt flavor, but not very complex, and again, not much going in the hop department. Drinkable and ok, but a disappointment compared to their other beers.

Can version. ****One thing that should be said, though it might not matter much to all you cats drinking this overseas, but this beer in the can is the best value in Japan. It costs pennies more than standard p*ss in a land where micros cost huge bucks, and really kicks it in. If you see it here, but and drink lots of it**** Big cascade hops, very, very fruity, good caramel malt. Exquisite balance. Good from start to finish. Also I must add that it is better from the cask, especially the oak cask if you are lucky enough to get it. Hold on for those ratings down the road.

Tan bubbles on top of a devil-black body. Spicy malt to the nose. Dark malts in flavour added a solid dash of liquorice. Hoppy endnotes. Medium bodied, complex brew (Cask at GBBF, 05.08.2008).

Bottle, 70cl(?). 2005 vintage. Pours a slightly unclear, dark golden body with a small, beige head on top. Piney, resiny, slightly citrusy aroma with a nice malty sweetness to balance it. Caramel. It has a little warming feeling on the palate, with the flavors being on the hoppy side, with resin, pine and citrus. Still, there’s enough malty caramel-sweetness to prevent it from going completely out of balance. Bitter, resiny and warming finish. A delicious treat, and a nice experience drinking it with it’s creator. (080811)

Ceramic bottle, 2005 vintage sampled in 2008. Shared together with the brew master himself. Clear amber body with a thin beige head. Aroma is malt, caramel, dry fruit, spices and a hint of alcohol, very complex. Flavor is complex as well, sweet malt, caramel, dry fruit, citrus, raisins, a hint of sherry and warming alcohol. Incredible well balanced with a long and pleasant finish that just goes on and on. Quite easy to drink, but made for sipping. Lovely.
