Description
The Rothaus Brewery was founded 1791 through the Benedictine monastery St. Blasien in the “Zum Rothen Haus” inn (“To the Red House” in English). Following the secularizations of 1806, the Rothaus Brewery fell out of the hands of the monks and became property of the Grand Duchy of Baden and was renamed the “Großherzogliche Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus” (Grand Ducal State Brewery Rothaus of Baden). The November Revolution of 1918, which led to the abolition of the monarchy in Baden, caused the company to shorten their name to Badische Staatsbrauerei Rothaus (State-owned brewery of Baden), as from then on the brewery was owned by the federal state of Baden.

Since 1922, the company has had the legal form of a stock corporation, the shares of which are currently held entirely by the associated company of the state of Baden-Württemberg. The continuously large demand for Rothaus beer has in the past made large investments necessary. This allowed the Rothaus Brewery to grow into one of the most modern facilities in Germany.

Hay and orange in the aroma. Hoppy, strong orange flavor. Long hoppy finish. Good, firm pilsener. Tap: Hotel Löwen Todtmoos. The rain keeps pouring down but the overripe lady in dirndl served me this pale blonde pilsener at the covered patio. Soft hoparoma. Malty flavor with boiled milk and a fair dosage of hops. Flowery.

Firm frothy head. Deep orange color, a bit cloudy. Grapes, citrus and bananaaroma. Fairly thin and very fruity weizen. A bit of citric sourness. Slight yeasty bitter aftertaste. A well made tasty weizen that could use a bit more body.

Certainly not an eisbock, but a märzen. Golden color. Malty aroma with some apple and chalk. Malty with some hoppy and tannine-like bitterness. Grapes. Medium bodied. Slight bitter aftertaste. Decent märzen that doesn’t stand out in any way.

Tasty German pils, very grassy and bright, with layers of grain, straw, lemon, white bread, and flowers backed up by a distinct Noble bitterness. Finishes clean and yeasty, underlined by a gentle mineral-tinged grainy sweetness. Pretty sure I could drink this all day. Nice.
