750 ml. bottle sampled @ O.B.E.R. Kestbierfestival 2014. (Thx!) Hazy amber orange, beige. Nose is varnish, odd chemical. Taste is ginger, vomit, herbs & vanilla. Medium. What gives, not particularly enjoyable.

Newish Eutropius beer tasted when it was still simply called Oscar without the ’Blond’ (i.e. before the advent of its brown counterpart). Thick, very dense and moussy, lacing, egg white head and deep and warm orangey ’old gold’ colour, clear with quiet sparkling. Aroma strikingly reminiscent of abbey cheese, further impressions of soap, grass, biscuit, cooked potato, white wine, raw cauliflower, apple peel, mango (probably the secret American hop variety), yoghurt, rose petals, nougat, chamomille, powder sugar, dough; there is something unusual about it too, I guess the added secret spice - my bet is on sweet gale (as in Gageleer)? Fruity onset, a bit restrained but sweet and appetizing, apple, pineapple and some hints of banana, minerally carbo, very vague salty touch, some citrus acidity too, dryish, yeasty, pale malt sweetness, creamy and rounded, retronasally that mysterious spice again (and I stick to my sweet gale hypothesis), leading to a dry yeast and hops finish, grassy, leafy but less ’American’ and citrussy than I had hoped, quite long, with some solvents and wodka-like alcohol. My best Eutropius experience so far, honest and quenching; this is far from bad, though the alcohol could have been better hidden and honestly, there are a lot of contenders in this particular ’Belgian blond’ style. Still: enjoyable alright.

One of Eutropius’ first, a winter beer with malt sweet main character, spicy hints, yeasty, with spiciness of juniper berries, cardamom and gale. Typical wintery spice ale, not bad at all.

Eutropius’ third beer, with a very stable, off-white, moussy head and deep orange blonde colour with tiny yeast bit floating around, cloudy with deposit. Powerful aroma of orange peel, peach, cinnamon, white pepper, biscuit, whisky, brown bread, dusty yeast. Dry fruitiness, unripe stonefruit, light spicy hints, caramelly and slightly nutty maltiness, rapid and long, dry, grapefruity hop bitterness, some warming alcohol in the finish.
