Description
Brasserie de Silly NV is still family-owned and is now in the hands of the sixth generation of the same family. The company is managed by cousins, Lionel and Bertrand Van der Haegen. Bertrand is responsible for production and Lionel looks after sales. Their parents, brothers Jean-Paul and Didier Van der Haegen are still active Board members. Brasserie de Silly has seen steady growth thanks to export sales and its quality image. Production in 2008 was 1,000,000 litres, but in 2018, 2,500,000 litres are expected to flow out of the tanks. Sales are on the up and up. Belgian beers produced in a traditional way are increasingly popular around the globe.

Bottle from HoTM. It pours hazy orange - blonde with a decent fluffy white head. The aroma is soft, sweet , doughy white bread, biscuit, orange marmalade sandwiches, fragrant, orange blossom, cracker and some grand marnier. The taste is crispy, dry, snappy, fragrant, floral, orange blossom, some bitterness, citrus peel, orange marmalade, herbal, peppery spice, slightly soapy vibes, kick of booze, cracker, biscuit, sponge and dull papery accents. Finish is dry and citrusy. Medium body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Has more depth of flavour than I expected. Interesting and quaffable.

One of several Silly Scotch variants aged on barrels, of the noble Pinot Noir wine in this case; five year old 75 cl bottle with cork and muselet, thanks Jan D.C. for sharing this cellar gem! Moussey, frothy, egg-white, membrane-lacing, irregularly shaped but retaining head, misty burgundy-brown robe with copper red glow. Alluring aroma of caramel, ‘oaky’ vanillin, creamy red wine, butter, old wrinkled storage apples, pear, blue plum, grape skins, raisin bread, medium dry sherry, sweat, clove, rosemary, baked banana. Sweet and fruity onset, ripe blue plum and pear with a slight dash of banana, very softly tart edge from the wine increasing a bit towards the end but never becoming ‘oud bruin’-like (which is what I was expecting a bit); softly carbonated, vinous body. Caramelly, lightly walnutty and brown-bready matiness, growing woody tannins with eventually a clear red wine effect shining through it all, adding tart fruitiness to the expected toasty side of the malts, a combo which in this case works very well. Some leafy hops too, but primarily remaining sweet and very fruity with that lovely dark malty underbuilt; vinous, warming port-like alcohol in the end, non-astringent. Quite a delicate ‘bière de dégustation’, fragrant and probably benefiting from a few years of cellaring; in any case a pleasant surprise, even better than I was anticipating.

Bottle from HoTM. It pours hazy chestnut brien with a decent off the-white head. The aroma is sweet, candy sugar, caramel, cola, raisin, sultana, toasted fruit cake, cacao nibs and dull coffee. The taste is dry and toasty upfront, burnt toast, slightly charred, cacao nibs, chocolate bourbons, tobacco, dried fruits, raisin, sultana, nuttiness, walnut, pecan, warming booze, earth, coffee beans and some spice. Dry roast on the finish. Medium+ body and moderate, foamy carbonation. Pretty punchy stuff. Perhaps rough around the edges, bits alright.

Bottle from HoTM. It pours deep red with a medium fluffy beige head. The aroma is sticking, caramel, cola cubes, some warming spice, peppery, fragrant, floral and pot pourri. The taste is crisp, dry, pleasing bitterness, quite spicy, peppery, clove, dry wood, sappy, resin, nip of alcohol, caramel, cola cubes, herbal and touch of Jaegermeister / covonia. Finish is drying, herbal and spicy. Medium body and moderate+ foamy carbonation. Not what I was expecting, but I don't dislike it.
