Description
In the beginning, in 2004, the Lupulus brewery was built to brew beers for the tavern next door. In 2007, the brewery decided to create a new beer, in kegs and in Champagne bottles. The brewers wanted to offer a traditional beer with its own unique flavour, using modern equipment. The region where the brewery is based gave the brewers the inspiration they were looking for. The brewery is housed in a magnificent old 19th century farm, a part of Ardennes heritage. The installation is based in the middle of surrounding green fields, beside a freshwater stream. The historical record is sketchy, but we know that wolves populated the Ardennes landscape in olden times. Some say that these wolf-packs came from Slovenia, where the best hops in the world are cultivated... True story? In any case, the wolf was behind the creation of a new beer: Lupulus. The name derives from the Latin name of the hop plant Humulus Lupulus, which means Small Humble Wolf.

Medium yellow head over hazy brown-amber beer. Very spiced nose, and lots of ureum (the hops?). Honey, dark malts, bready; sweet - very dark Bock-like. Medium to really well-bodied, slick and warming. Nice beer, appears very German to me.

On Tap@Cafe Belgique, Utrecht. Faded slightly murky gold with a mid range off-white head. Some fragrant grassy hop in the nose alongside some citrus, spice and yeast notes. Carbonation fairly lively. The elements present in the nose also showed up in the sweetish flavour with some pale malts. Dried out towards the finish. Perfectly drinkable and not without some appealing characteristics but somehow lacking a certain jenesaisquoi.

21/01 0.75 l bottle courtesy of ogivlado, thanks for sharing! It poured hazy golden body with medium to bigger head. Orange, biscuit and banana beneath, typical hopped belgian ale aroma. Conversely, flavor was more sweet than bitter, biscuity, vanilla sugary and herbal hoppy. Some hints of orange as well. For sure liked its balance, although it wouldn’t miss more body, especially as of higher ABV. By the way, alcohol is perfectly hidden. Finish is crown of this beer, long, pleasant, perfect harmony of malt and hops following the flavor with some chalky notes at the very end. Truly a pleasure!

Bottle @ DØE meeting. Pours hazy light golden with a white head. Aroma of hops, grapefriut and pine, tart fruit. Taste is much like aroma, hoppy but with a good malt base to balance it. Medium body, low carbonation. Nice and refreshing beer. 190111
