Firkin version at Barley’s 8th Annual Mini RAF (05/22/10): This beer pours a clear dark reddish-brown color with a thin and dense light beige head that dissipates to a film eventually. Spotty lacing. Aroma of tart fruit and caramel. Medium, smooth body with flavors of caramel malt, fruit and bourbon. The finish is oaky with a dark malt and bourbon aftertaste. Above average overall.

Firkin version at Barley’s 8th Annual Mini RAF (05/22/10): Pours black with with a thin beige head that has large bubbles and dissipates quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of oak, bourbon and baker’s chocolate. Rich and smooth body with flavors of oaky bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and malt. The finish is a bourbon-infused cherry cordial with a dark malty aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

750ml bottle pours a transparent, reddish amber with a frothy white head. Sugary, malty aroma. Flavor is sweet, caramel, oranges. Finish is medium bodied.

On draught at the brewpub, this is the April selection in Elevator’s "PHD" program. The beer is flat black with a thin, creamy and dense tan head that burns away slowly. Sheet of lacing on the glass. Mildly roasted malt and coffee aroma. Medium, smooth body with flavors of roasted coffee, sweet malt and some chocolate. The finish is a little thin with a roasty sweet malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Sample at the brewpub. The beer is a clear amber-orange color with a thin and foamy light beige head that diminishes quickly. Sticky rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark malt with woody and boozy notes. Rich, smooth body with flavors of bourbon, earthy malt and dark fruits. The finish is boozy and malty with a lingering sweet aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable barrel-aged brew overall.

Bottle at DC local tasting. Reddish color, medium white head. Aroma is very redish as well, if that makes any sense. Not sure. It was a long night, but that’s what my notes say. Taste is very malty, with some summer fruits. Pretty average.

Bottle thanks to Americanbrew. Pours with an amber body and a large white head. Aroma of alcohol and citrus. Flavor is the same, hoppy, caramel, alcohol, citrus. Creamy carbonation.

Sample at the brewpub. This beer is a clear orange color with a medium off-white head that burns away steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Perfumy hops aroma with some citrus notes. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops flavor that has piney and citrusy notes. Malt is present in the background as well. The finish is hoppy and lingering. Pretty good overall.

On draught at the brewpub, this is the March selection in Elevator’s "PHD" program. Pours a clear dark amber color with a thin ivory white head that is lasting. Sheet of lacing on the glass. Aroma of sweet fruit and caramel. Medium, smooth body with a sweet caramel malt flavor along with some tropical fruit. Very low hops profile. The finish is sweet with a fruity aftertaste. Average at best overall.
