Sample at the brewpub. The beer pours a dark orange-amber color with a thick and foamy light beige head that dissipates slowly. Sticky sheet of lacing on the glass. Aroma of spiced hops, malt and macaroni-n-cheese. Medium to full body with flavors of caramel malt, sharp hops and sweet fruit. The finish is malty up front but is quickly overtaken by astringent hops that leaves a lingering bitterness. Slightly above average overall.

On draught at the brewpub, this is the January selection in Elevator’s "PHD" program. The beer pours dark brown with a medium thick and creamy beige head that diminishes slowly. Sticky patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, spices and yeast. Medium, smooth body with flavors of malt, spices, hops and yeast. The finish is clean and spicy with a mild spice and fruit aftertaste. Overall an interesting and enjoyable brew, whatever it is they were going for.

On tap at the Elevator. Pale yellow, very little head, no lacing, no body. Still not too bad, but does have corn taste.

Several mugs from a 5g keg, and my 400th Ohio beer. The beer is a mostly clear brown-amber color with a medium foamy beige head that diminishes steadily. Spice and malt in the nose. Medium body with flavors of sweet malt and spices, piney hops and a bit of fruit. The finish is sweetly spiced wit a mild hoppy aftertaste. Decent overall.

On tap at the Oakroom in Athens, Ohio and at Elevator in downtown Columbus, and from bottle. Draft downtown is slightly better. It has medium to small head for the style and minimal lacing. It was served with a lemon on the side at brewpub. Nice clove and a little banana. Not especially sophisticated or complex, but a nice session beer. I feel that this beer is a little underrated by other raters.

On draught at Gallo’s Tap Room. The beer pours a flat black color with a minimal light beige head that leaves only an outer ring after a moment. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark malt, caramel and oaky vanilla. Rich and smooth body with flavors of sweet malt, vanilla and oak. Touches of mocha as well. The finish is roasty and sweet and leaves a lingering vanilla aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Sample at the North Market Microbrew Festival on 09/12/2009. This brew is a clear dark amber color with a medium thin off-white head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Bready malt and rye in the nose. Medium body with flavors of grainy malt, mild hops and subtle rye. The finish is hoppy up front with a short rye and malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Aroma of yeast, wood and dark chocolate. Medium body with flavors of wheat, clove, yeast and dark malt. Touches of oak at times too. The finish is wheaty with notes of banana and malt left behind. Above average overall.

Sample at the North Market Microbrew Festival on 09/12/2009. The beer is a flat black color with a thin light beige head that disappears quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate malt and dark fruit. Medium, smooth body with flavors of milk chocolate, mild coffee and plum. The finish is somewhat roasty with a mildly bitter coffee aftertaste. The plum flavor is subtle but it is there. Interesting and pretty good overall.

On draught at Gallo’s Tap Room. The brew is a clear dark golden color with a thin off-white head that burns away quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of mild hops and tropical fruit. Light, clean body with flavors of wheat, lightly spiced hops and sweet fruit. Honey taste is negligible but honestly not really missed. The finish is fruity with a short wheaty-hoppy finish. Decent overall.
