Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Too much smoked malts, overrules the teaflavor.

Afterparty at Maakun’s [Week van het Nederlandse Bier 2015]. Zoeken naar koffie, ergens ligt wel een Haags hopje, onder de zure besjes. Wordt zachter alsie ontdooid. Choco. Onmiskenbare Belg. 33cl bottle in ’Beers of Yesteryear’ Brugge in Dec 2015. Poured a slightly hazy golden colour with a thin white head. The nose was firstly light malts, some citrus notes followed with a spicy, piny hop undertone. The taste was not of Christmas spices though, some herbal traces but more like a tampered with hoppy and bitter Pilsner. I did enjoy it, just not expecting what it actually tasted like.

Helder oranjekleurig bier zonder schuim. Smaak is licht bitter en fruitig, ananas en iets citrus. Vrij lichte IPA.

Donkergeel bier met schuim. Smaak is hoppig bitter en fruitig, licht zoet met iets van bessen. Helaas iets te waterig om een echt goede score te krijgen.

2014 Vintage - 375 c&c from Malt and Vine. Pours murky ruddy dark brown with a slight beige smear for head. Aroma of tobacco, darker fruits, and wood. Near full bodied. Flavor is darker fruits, wood, brandy, and strange chocolate notes. Not to mention treacle. It’s certainly not dry, nor is it very bitter, but the brandy generates lift off. Really tasty.

Tasted in Ghent a few months ago but apparently forgot to enter my rating; as Préaris Blond, but apparently also marketed as a saison, in that case not to be confused with a small batch Préaris Saison that was made later to a different recipe. Hazy golden beer under a creamy, off-white, lacing head; aroma of apple, grass, some peach, white bread; soft estery onset, smooth and quite crisp, gooseberry and peach fruitiness, soft bready pale malt sweetishness, lean body, medium dry finish with some herbal hop bitterishness. Very quaffable but not really too remarkable either in view of the hundreds of similar beers populating this country.

Donkerbruin bier zonder schuim. Smaak is krachtig, licht zoetzuur met sporen van drop, chokolade en cognac/bessen. Jammer dat het bier vrij "dood" is anders had de waardering nog hoger geweest. Smaak blijft redelijk lang hangen.

Hazy and murky dark brown, with a fluffy tan head with decent retention. Smel!ls of sour cabbage (hope it?s not a bad bottle) and some bourbon, cocoa, chocolate, coffee but all of these very feint underneath the pickled cabbage. The taste is sweet, kind of, with milk chocolate, dried fruit and some coffee, all of that hidden underneath a layer of sour cabbage. Dubious beer.
