Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Semi-opaque dark murky ruby pour, with a decent head with no retention. Smells like dried fruit (raisins, figs), brewed coffee, chocolate. Tastes like prunes, cocoa, dark chocolate, cognac, cherries, white wine, stuff like that. Light body with medium carbonation, sweet and spicy (due to the alcohol) aftertaste.

Levendig geel bier met veel schuim. Smaak is bitter hoppig. Lijkt niet op een standaard witbier maar is desondanks best goed.

Bottle, 10%. Vinous aroma, bready with a hint of yeast and spicy hops. Cloudy light brown colour. Small stable tan head. The flavour is spicy, reminding me of spicy rum. Dark sugar notes, but not sweet. Late roasted notes. Vinous finish. Milk chocolate or perhaps Nesquick powder. High bitterness.

Bottle from Belgiuminabox. Pours dark, unclear brown. Good white head. Smell is burbon ( for the sake of easyness, lets concider Jack Daniels a bourbon here ) full, more ’buttery’ ( yet very far from dyacethyl ) . Taste has a nice roastyness, and a 100 % on-the-spot intensity from the barrel. In your face, but also in balance, as the basebeer can be tasted clearly. Vanilla notes are above average, as well as the grainyness from JD. The dark malts , the bitterness, the perfect mf... every aspect you’d want is right there. This is seriously good buisness, once again !

Bottle. Pours hazy darkish ruby / copper brown with airy but stable beige head. Clear aroma of malt, chocolate and coffee, with notes of yeast and alcohol and some dried fruit. Bitter, hoppy and slightly roasty flavour with sweetish notes of caramel malt and touches of dark chocolate, coffee and fruit. Bitterish, roasty aftertaste with coffeelike notes. Warming alcohol presence. A nice one although a trifle watery.

750ml. Big foamy off-white/beige head on top of an unfiltered burgundy brown body. Chalky subdued aroma. Fruity and rich, but doesn’t have the depth or mouthfeel of typical Belgian examples. Raisin, red fruit all the way. Sweet and sugary, not that impressive for a Belgian. OK.

Mørk brun noe tåkete med to fingre høyt beige skum. Lukter kaffe, gjær og mørke frukter. Fyldig. Smaker alkohol, urter, kaffe og salt lakris. Lett sødme ligger bak. Middels lang saltbitter smak.
