Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

Bottled 330ml. -Courtesy of and shared with Marko, thanks. Red/brown coloured, big creamy beige head, spices and alcohol in the nose. Sweet malty, caramel, fruity and yeasty with notes of brown sugar and alcohol. Alcohol quite noticable and pretty strong notes of pear. Too sweet overall.

Hazy straw colour, a lot of tiny bubbles, tall foamy white head, dissipating to a small foamy layer, light lacing. Aroma wheat, yeast, apple, white grapes, light lemon. Taste light medium sweet and light sourish, fruity. Short light sourish aftertaste, light spicy notes, light body, watery texture, lively carbonation. A fresh fruit beer, nice.

Bottle from Ludo, shared with ogivlado. Misty brown-amber dark body with a lasting off white head. The aroma mixes standard Belgian maltiness with pear esters and alcohol that sometimes unfortunately overtakes the otherwise nice fruity malt-ester combo. Nice taste, lighter and more drinkable than expected despite a solid sweetness. Pear esters rule the show here, no doubt about that, brown sugar too, but not too sweet. Definitely a very good beer but juuuust slightly away from true greatness.

Bab 2017. Thnx for sharing 77Ships and Tderoeck ! Pours unclear blonde. OK white head. Smell is bit hoppy. Malty, some yeast. Taste is sharp. Overcarbonated. Bit bitter. Very, very mild hoppyness. OK beer, just perhaps not as sexy as I’d expected from this Brewery.

At Bruges Beer Fest 2017. Pours clear red with a light pink head that leaves lacing. The aroma contains raspberry, wheat and dough. It tastes medium to light sweet, very light bitter and medium sour. Dry and wheat-like on the tongue, long finish, fizzy carbonation.

375ml cork and wire bottle, vintage 2014, No. 02327. Provided by Finn. A filmy layer to a deep rosewood coloured body. Spotty lacing. Subdued doughy aroma with hints of dried fruits. Interesting blend of prunes, dough, and oak added by a bourbon touch. Dried fruity ending. Vinous impression. Full bodied. Gets rather sweet in the long run. Nice in smaller amounts (Shared with Finn and djoeye, Tromsø 11.02.2017).
