Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

At Bruges Beer Fest 2017. Pours hazy orange-brown with an off-white head. The aroma contains bourbon, yeast, banana, alcohol and wood. It tastes light sweet and light bitter - balanced. Decent carbonation and oily texture. Solid.

330 ml. bottle split @ Beerlovers Bar. Purchased @ Bruges Beer Festival 2017. Dark orange amber red with little bubbles. Nose is hugely thick & sweet in a very BE fashion with big cuberdon notes, sugar, sweet, candy, excessively sweet. Taste is massive almost strange hark back to DE fashion with big fish guts note combined with cuberdons massive very Belgian sweetness, oily caramel, candy, fish guts profile, near umami, BE notes, almost cloying, oily. Thick sugar, caramel. Puzzling beers that goes BE sweat for broke, extreme sugar, fermented to almost vague DE fish guts notes in a non-lager malt thick brew. It does many things other than fitting into the standard USA styled barley wine category. Puzzling beer, not entirely to personal preference but an interesting one & pretty decent one.

Bottled 330ml. -from Magic Beer Room Zagreb. Pale golden coloured, small white head, mild citrusy nose. Grapefruity and mild herbal hoppy, moderate bitterness, notes of grass and touch of spices in rather bitter finish and aftertaste. Not really a X-mas beer but quite nice.

Drank most of a 330 ml. on the train post Bruges Beer Festival 2017. Very hazy amber orange, collapsing white head. Nose is some peach yoghurt, bit stale, dough, white bread. Taste is dough, taste is better than the smell, carbonation is too high, body is lots of dough, sugar, white bread, faint soap, malt profile dominates, getting little hop, malt profile reminded me a bit of their ’t Brugs Beertje beer. Okay.

Thank you kraddel! 330 ml. bottle split post Bruges Beer Festival 2017 @ train station. Quite hazy orange, creamy HUGE white head. Nose malty bread, orange, sugar, low marzipan, big prominent doughy malts, fluffy fresh baked bread. Taste is bread-like thick malt, dough, grains, agave, sugar, malt, warming orange peal. Fluffy dough body. Pleasant lightly sweet malt forward beer. I rather liked the malt profile. Nice one.
