Description
For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition. We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final. The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

330 ml. bottle split with kraddel @ train post-Bruges Beer Festival 2017. BBF 05.01.2018. Looks nice dark red pink raspberry, vaguely pink head. Nose is sadly heavily metallic, low sugar, raspberry feels sugary & fake. Body ruins all taste, extremely over-carbonated. Taste is stale yeast upfront, metallic, artificial bitter, fruit is barely there, washing powder, whatever raspberry is there feels fake. Bit of a waste of fruit really. Sorry, I wanted to like but this is a miss & I don’t see many beer geeks liking, maybe the more casual beer drinker can appreciate this, fruit doesn’t feel real, carbonation makes it feel empty, it is metallic. Not sure what this was meant to be, real fruit sweet beer?

250 ml from tap at Antwaerps Bierhuyske. Served in flute. Nice dark brown colour. Fantastic aroma. Cognac. Cherry Liquor. Vermouth. Spices. Caramel. Not that malty though. Bittersweet taste. Soft carbonation. Thick oily texture. Full body. Long and intense finish. Great!

New addition to Andy Dewilde’s Préaris range, at BBF. Thick and very creamy, dense, pale yellowish beige head, dark bronze colour with warm burgundy hue, hazy. Aroma of caramel sauce, honey, raisins, candied fig, white port, orange peel, white rum, marmelade, white pepper, wet leather. Sweet onset of dried banana and fig, slight sourish redcurrant-like accent and even a very light beefy umami touch, medium carbo, full and smooth, ’fluffy’ mouthfeel though perhaps a tad less vinous than one would expect from the style, thick toffeeish malt sweetness with a soft, subtle toasted accent, lingering candied banana and honey sweetness but balanced in the end by a dash of spicy hops and warming, brandy-like but non-astringent alcohol. English style barleywine indeed but still with certain Belgian (quad-like) traits, which however do not disturb me here; perhaps a little bit overcarbonated, but otherwise a delicious beer, technically in perfect condition, rich and warming. Recommended, hopefully this will soon be a part of the more widely available Préaris range.
