For years we brewed beers in our basement when we read an article in October 2010 about the Brouwland beer competition.We decided to risk our chances and sent our version of a Trappist beer, a dark beer, full malt, of 10%.In March 2011 we were informed that we were selected for the final. Beginning in April 2011 was ultimately the final.The seven finalist beers were tasted by beer connoisseurs, Zythologists Rijckers Anne and Yannick De Cocteau and some Belgian brew masters like Paul Arnott (Dubuisson), and Jean-Marie De Rock (Orval). The first beers were tasted and judged one for one, much was noted. Mutually there was not much talk together ,until they started our beer (the final seven beers were tasted in order of alcohol). All jurors began to talk to each other and two of them even gave us a thumbs up. Then, we knew it was good. After fifteen minutes of deliberations they announced the winner … Vliegend Paard Brouwers from Oedelem with their Préaris Quadrupel.

330 ml. bottle @ Gollem. BBF 17.10.2017. Lightly hazy orange, big creamy white head. Nose is murky wet burlap sack sweet malty, overly sugary, thick musty grains, bit dirty. Taste is overly sweet, far too grainy, malty, sugar, unpleasant thick grainy body & taste, thick wet burlap sack, bread, sugar, grain, bit fizzy, lacks hop quality & hard to drink despite the Session moniker, I struggled with this one. Sorry this one is not for me.

330 ml. bottle @ Gollem. BBF 14.01.2017. Deep ruby red cherry red, lemonade, very brief pink bubbles. Nose is indeed massive beetroot, sweet cooked beetroot, faintly watery, overall massive cooked beetroot, wonderful. Taste is lightly sweet beetroot, sugary cooked beetroot, low yoghurt, final bit takes it bit down, low vegetable faintly spoiled beetroot, lightly earthly beetroot, mineral feel, biological weird vegetable lemonade, thin metallic. Body is metallic, thin fizzy, beetroot lemonade feel. Very interesting concept, taste carries a bit too lemonade, spoiled beetroot yoghurt notes but still quite good overall. Great concept & good execution. I am a fan.

Bottle. Hazy golden body with yeast flecks floating beneath a thin white head. Lively fizz. Good lacing. Aroma of hay and salted orange. Flavour of lemon and coriander seeds. Medium body with a light, fizzy mouthfeel. Just ok.

Bottle, 7.5% ABV, BB 19.10.2017 (from etre gourmet). Pours dark brown with beige head. The head stays. Aroma is classic porter aroma: sweet, malt, roast, fruits. Flavor is sweet and bitter, roast, malt, fruits, some smoke, chocolate, toffee, bit creamy. No sign of alcohol. Overall: very nice. Not very complex, but very nicely balanced. This reminds me Fuller’s Porter, which I adore.

Bottle, BB 17.02.17 (from etre gourmet). Pours golden with huge whiteish head. The head stays. Aroma is wheaty, yeasty, fruity, citrusy. Flavor is sweet and bitter, wheat, fruits, sugar, yeast, metallic notes. Finish is dry grassy bitter with metallic notes. Overall: ok, smells a lot better than tastes.

23/12/2016 @home - 33cl bottle from a trade with tderoeck. Light hazy orange with small white head. Nose is some malts, caramel, spice, bitterhops. Taste is some fruits, caramel, spice, bitter. Nice one

Clear deepest ruby brown, average frothy beige head, half-way lasting, fair lacing. Aroma roasted malts, cocoa, dark fruits, caramel. Thin taste, medium sweet and bitter, malty, fruity. Sweetbitter aftertaste, fruity notes, bit coffee, medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation, so so.

Large sample from one of many 33ml bottles at a tutored beer tasting in Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury on 15th Dec 2016. Slight haze to the golden pour, wispy white head. Lightly smoked aroma of burnt tea leaves, taste similar, with a mild herbal twist and mini-citrus leaning. Not really my thing: subtle flavours and a smokey feel to it: never guess it was 8% ABV though.

hazy brown colour, minimal creamy beige-ish head; aroma of dried plum, raisin, cherry bonbon with dark chocolate, oak and bourbon notes, maybe hints of vanilla, too, taste of cherry bonbon with dark chocolate again, some plum, raisin, rye bread notes, alcoholic spiciness and herbal notes; great quadrupel

11/XII/16 - 33cl bottle from the brewery @ home - BB: n/a (2016-1464)

Note: my own stupid fault, I thought this was a stout, so I waited way too long before I ever drank it. Sorry Andy!
Clear dark brown beer, big aery beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very malty, some chocolate, dusty, coffee, charcoal, pretty roasted. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very roasted start, bit sweet, caramel, malty, grains. Aftertaste: bit hoppy, soft roast, fruity touch, sourish, some oranges, bit of band-aid, some ripe banana.
