Draught. Red color, typical creamy head. Some nitrogen aroma. Not impressive, but at least smooth, a bit malty, with a correct balance of bitterness at the end. Lightmalt smoothness is the most evident feature.

Colour: nearly full black. Dark brown, very thick head, going down as lace. Nose gives burnt malts, black coffee, roasted nuts. Bitter, and in the same breath malt-sweet taste, again overtaken by roasted malt bitterness and caramelisation, constantly fluctuating. Retronasal flavour of coffee-covered cookies and cured ham. Rich mouthfeel, little carbonisation, seems to have been knocked out by pouring. The little carbonation notwithstanding, there's a sourness from the CO2. This is a very strange beer, very balanced with sweet, bitter and sour collaborating to create a rich beer. I have problems with its qualification as "sweet" stout. Somewhere between a classis Irish stout and an Imperial ditto, I'd say.

Instructions on the bottle say to drink from the bottle, so a high appearance rating isn’t appropriate as you can’t see much of what is inside. Some coffee aroma, and also in the flavor. Next time I will buy the can and pour into a glass instead.

A dark amber beer with a very fine head. The aroma is slight primarily sweet. The flavor is acidic at first but very soft with a good sweetness and a slight bitterness. A beer with a very good balance.

Light gold in colour..mild in smell, not much to the smell. Crisp taste, decent all-around lager, but not something i''d have around all the time. Who would ever say this replaces Bass in a ''true'' Black & Tan??? It must be the irish!!

Always completely opaquely black in colour. Not much smell...but completely balanced from the subtle taste and great flavour. The de facto standard of stouts, and always perfect from the can with the always amazing widget!

Rerate 1/3/03: I am not sure what I was thinking in my first rating. I had a bottle of this last weekend and it was really not very impressive at all. There is a little hops in the aroma and flavor but that's about it. 1/6/02 (3.5): Very impressive lighter, crisper alternative from the makers of Guinness. Nice flavor and a great pour.

Rerate 12/30/02: One year later, I have to go back and round this one down a bit. I will always appreciate Guinness because it was one of the first different beers I tried, but at this point I have had many better Stouts, and I like Imperial Stouts more than Dry Stouts now. You can always count on not looking like a sissy drinking it next to your Bud-swilling buddy. 12/30/01 (4.8): There truly is no better. The first time I had it I absolutely hated it, luckily I tried it again and realized it must have been warm and old. Since then it is probably my favorite rich, stout beer, and possibly my overall favorite.
