Description
De Neve was founded in 1792, though the brewery site dates back to 1772. In addition to producing Lambic, Gueuze, and Kriek, De Neve also produced "high fermentation" (top-fermented) ales such as Nèval Kadet, Nèval Speciale, and Rodal Bier. In 1975, the brewery was acquired by Belle-Vue under Constant Vandenstock, which was itself later acquired by Interbrew in 1991. Despite public protests led by nonprofit group Objectieve Bierproevers (OBP), the brewery was closed three years later in 1994. After sitting vacant for over 20 years, the brewery site was sold in 2006, with plans for a loft apartment building complex. The buildings that formerly housed the brewery were recently converted to luxury apartments.

This bottle acquired in a trade appears to be from 1992. 37.5CL with 91-93 on the label but none of them scratched to indicate the year. Served in a Gueuze Tumblr @ 45 Degrees F.

A - Ultra cloudy, just a murky burnt gold color. Cork had a small whisp of carbonation but no head formed.

S - The nose is not overwhelming but it smells very sour, lots of lemon, lime, maybe some cherry cola, coconut and balsamic vinegar.

T - Oh yeah, this is a total sour bomb! Insanely sour like it’s hurting my tongue but it has a lot of depth. A lot of flavor going on, nice lemon and sour dough bread and skittles.

M - Pretty much completely flat

O - Really enjoyed trying this. I have a 75CL as well but given I’m drinking this with just 1 other person, I’m glad it was enjoyed in the smaller format first.

1990 A dark reddish brown. 1 finger head. Nose is a mild tartness and a lot of cane sugar with maple doughnut and a bit of peach. Very little carbonation. Is more oily. At first you get a musty basement funk and shoe grossness with a slight kriek. After some decanting, the basement mold taste has faded. Cheery comes through more but it’s a bit too sweet still

1990 vintage bottle shared at DHVL. Pours clear dark golden with a small bubbly off white head. Aroma of mouldy dank cellar, big cobwebs, citrus, still a little fruity. Flavour is moderate acidic going into a heavy acidic finish. Very dry in the palate. Over medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Bottle courtesy of Magnus (non-RB). Best before 1994 but not sure on the actual vintage. Smell is slightly sour and slightly funky with crackers, leather, hay, dry soil, lemon peal, barnyard, prunes, horse blanket, codwebs and hints of cardboard. Taste is tiny sweet, tiny sour, tiny malty and tiny fruity with crackers, hay, lemon zest, barnyard, leather, cardboard, white raisins, dry soil, horse blanket, codwebs and hints of wine gums. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, slightly tart, flat and light bodied. Finish is tiny sour with crackers, lemon juice, hay, dry soil, leather, cardboard, barnyard, horse blanket and lemon zest. Pretty oxidized but still interesting, intriguing and tastes quite good.

Vintage at De Kulminator. Continued for a while by Belle-Vue for its good reputation, after De Neve stopped their activities in 1994. Orangey blonde colour, loose, off-white head. Fruity and yeasty aroma, sourish but not as assertive as usual for a traditional geuze, which I guess is logical as this was the filtered version; same for the taste, which had all lambic features but in a kind of restrained way, even a sweetish touch. Not bad as a stepping stone geuze to get to know the style - had it still existed, that is.

1990 Vintage. 750mL bottle at Grote Dorst, pours a clear amber with a small beige head. Nose brings out artificially sweet cherries above anything - a little stale smelling as well. Flavour is thankfully not so artificial, with lots of lightly sweetened cherries and very faint funk. No idea what this would've tasted like fresh, but I doubt it was ever very complex. Drinkable, but off the mark. Why filter a kriek...
