Description
De Neve was founded in 1792, though the brewery site dates back to 1772. In addition to producing Lambic, Gueuze, and Kriek, De Neve also produced "high fermentation" (top-fermented) ales such as Nèval Kadet, Nèval Speciale, and Rodal Bier. In 1975, the brewery was acquired by Belle-Vue under Constant Vandenstock, which was itself later acquired by Interbrew in 1991. Despite public protests led by nonprofit group Objectieve Bierproevers (OBP), the brewery was closed three years later in 1994. After sitting vacant for over 20 years, the brewery site was sold in 2006, with plans for a loft apartment building complex. The buildings that formerly housed the brewery were recently converted to luxury apartments.

1991 bottle shared at RBSG LA. Dirty, orangish-brown. Very funky, sulfury, acidic nose. Very sour, rather acidic, oxidized flavor. Intersting, but this is not at its best.

1991 bottle at Akkurat. It pours clear amber, with a thick white head. The nose is toffee apple, tinned fruit, maple syrup, apple, melon and toast. The taste is caramel, toffee, tinned fruit, tangy citrus and apricot, with a dryish finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not as sour as I normally like my geuze, but not a bad beer.

The official Odense sunny Thursday evening in June monster tasting event. 1981 vintage with a wet and pretty good looking cork. Hazy brown amber with a tiny off-white head. Complex aged aroma of cherry, raspberries, dried prunes and dates, and a faint balsamic vinegar note. Sweet and slightly tart flavour, with raspberries, dried dates and raisins. Faint cellar note, but has held up amazingly well.

Bottle at De Heeren van Liedekercke, March 2012. Unknown vintage other than it was from the late eighties. Clear golden/orange with no head. The aroma and taste was very sour. Wood, fruit, barnyard. Well balanced and well aged.

Sampled @ RBBWG Antwerpen. Cloudy orange color, small white head. Smell vinegar, cellar and sourness. Taste very acidic: ok, but not really my thing. Average mouthfeel.

/11/12/12//11

Shouldn't really be here, as this bottle was originally brewed by "De Neve" and not by Belle-Vue, but ratebeer won't let me create a new beer for it.

Tasting @John Versycks place, with some members of the Ghent Beersociety. Jeroboam bottle (3L) expired 1991, tasted on May 1st 2010. Bottle still "hissed" on popping out the cork. Pours a darkorange and clear for the first glasses to rusty-brown and clouded at the last glasses. Quite some foam while pouring, but this dissappeared very quickly. Smells sweet, port, cointreau, little dusty, wood. Tastes quite sweet, like very ripe fruits. Finishes to slightly acidic. Hints of orange, orange-peel (more clear in the last bit of the bottle) and mandarins. A little bit spicy, peppery. Alternating game of soury and sweet tones in the aftertaste. Not a real geuze anymore (what did you expect after +-30 years) but defenitely very interesting. Thanks to John for this opportunity.

Corked bottle at De Heeren Van Liedekercke, best before 12/1999
Cloudy orange-amber color, persistent small head. There is only a light aroma of cellar, perfumy, and some acetone. The body starts getting mellow, but the flavor is very acetic, the final acidity is aggressive. Quite extreme, I wonder if it will change in another 10 years.
