Sour ‘kriek’ with Gorsem cherries flavoured with fresh savory – an odd combination perhaps, but quite typical for Pellicle’s output. Thanks to Bart A. for sharing. Dense, moussey, shred-lacing, bright pink head on an initially clear, deep and pure ruby red robe, misty and a tad more burgundy-hued with sediment. Wonderful aroma initially strongly dominated by fresh savory herb – almost oregano-like (as in oregano on pizza), slowly fading to unveil sour cherry pulp and juice, cherry yoghurt, almond, sourdough, blackberry, sour cream, vanilla in the background. Tart, utterly fruity onset, crammed with very fleshy, juicy Gorsem cherries, as if drinking concentrated yet fresh Gorsem cherry juice, paired with subtle side impressions of blackberry, pomegranate and tangerine, medium carbonated; very vinous mouthfeel, like a creamy red wine, the creaminess coming from this huge dosage of cherries – which are used here in the most generous, rich and juicy way possible. Slight breadiness under all that sour cherry fleshiness, and of course the savory sets in retronasally – yet far less strongly so than orthonasally, overwhelmed by the sheer fruitiness of the Gorsem cherries. Light almondy and vanilla-like, tannic aromas and dryness further adorn the finish, while the sourness of the Gorsem cherries lingers for a long time in the very end, long after their proportionally more modest sweetness has faded. This is ‘kriek’ in its most splendid, vibrant and opulently vinous form, like a flavoured cherry wine that has already reduced and thickened a little bit – but the real ‘cherry on the sundae’ here is the savory, topping off everything with a lively and pungent, ‘freshly dark green’ mediterranean fragrance, matching unexpectedly well with the fruit. A brilliant combo of lambic, fruit and herbs again – such combinations being the house specialty of this remarkable blendery.
