Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.
Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com
Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).
The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.
Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

330ml panda from LCB. Pours thick black with tanned head. Powerful aroma of the aged oak and particularly maderia hit first, then notes of chocolate, mixed dark fruits, roasted malt, touch of liquorice. Taste of dark chocolate, raisins, port, oak, toffee. Its boozy and sweet but not overdone or too rich. Creamy mouthfeel with a fine to average carbonation. Long bitterness in the finish. Well balanced.

Black beer, thin head. Malty aroma, a little liquorice. Flsvour has toasty malt, liquorice, some dark chocolate. Rich, smooth, quite aniseed-y to my taste but very nice

Bottle. Dunno where from. That description btw! Who’s made that shite up?! Anyhoo. Deep ruby tinged dark brown. Slim dense lasting beige head. Pontefract cakes on the nose. Bit of a winter seasonal cake mix thing going on. Taste has a bonfire toffee sweetness with a dry and burnt ashy bitterness. Smooth enough overall with a poke from the ABV. Dry and spicy bitter finish.

20/9/2024. Draft at the Bury St Edmunds Craft Beer Festival. 2023 vintage brewed at Artefact. Pours black with a small frothy tan coloured head. Aroma is dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, coffee, dark fruits, molasses, ash. Moderate sweetness, medium roasted bitterness. Full bodied, smooth soft carbonation. Deep roasted chocolate finish. Great finisher.

Bottle. Nose is dark fruit, pronounced Madeira, brown sugar, leather, hints of chocolate, Christmas cake. Taste is rich leather, Christmas cake, dark fruits, roast malts, chcocolate, toffee, hazelnut, wood, brown sugar, leading to a warming spice note, and a herbal hop finish. Thick rich mouthfeel. Incredibly well balanced, rich without being cloying.
