Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.
Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com
Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).
The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.
Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

23/8/2024. Keg at Briarbank’s 2024 Summer Beer Festival. Pours a little unclear mid-brown with a small creamy off-white head. Aroma is woody, toffee, whisky, butterscotch, dried fruits, leafy, orange, hint of spice. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Quite full bodied, smooth, soft carbonation. Very nice, and a big step up from the non-BA version.

Bottle Lot no A09. Nose is chocolatey, soy, roast, treacle. Taste is pronounced treacle, malt, coffee, toast, lots of soy, prunes, plummy, salty, hint of tobacco, and brown sugar, spicy. Though mouthfeel is thick. I love a Baltic porter, and this is an excellent one. I'd understood the brewery had closed, so delighted to find it brewing as a cuckoo and in such fine fettle.

Bottle from HoTM. It pours darkest brown to black with a small bubbly khaki head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, dark roasted malt, cacao nibs, dark chocolate, toffee crisp, dried fruits, sultana, plum and date scone. The taste is dry roasted vibes upfront, bitter - sweet, dark roasted malt, freshly roasted coffee, burnt toast, charred wood, umami, salty liquorice, tannin, dried fruits, raisin, sultana, date, prune, fig rolls, touch of spice, tobacco, earth and warming booze with a dry, roasted finish. Fulsome body, fine carbonation and slick mouth feel. Nice depth of flavour and lovely balance. A classy Baltic porter.

Bottle from the Beer Shop Hitchin. I've always been a fan of the brewery and it's great to see it continue post-retirement. Anyway, it's been a long Sunday, busy morning but a relaxing afternoon as the girls have all been out and I've been at home dog sitting. Apart from a quick trip to Tudor Wines which has a good but pricey selection of interestingcraft beers. But I, as ever, digress. Great pour, a real darkness in the glass and no head. The taste is rich, sticky and multi dimensional, malt, oak and a real wine and port overlay. Real length in the mouth. This is good. Beats the Kernel Baltic Porter that I had last week (again) hands down. A true reflection of a master brewer at work.

Un très grand merci à Graham pour m'avoir offert cette bouteille. Cheers my friend.
