Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.
Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com
Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).
The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.
Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up online. Pours rich brown with a small, creamy khaki head. Medium sweet flavour with sturdy ashy roast, tangy berries, earth, tobacco, raisins, booze, old barrel wood. Full bodied, lightly chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, has a little acidity that cuts through the dark beer character nicely, some further berry notes, old leather, modest earthy bitterness, background ashy dryness. Good stuff.

Bottle thanks to cgarvieuk dregs run. Appearance - deep brown to black and opaque. Nose - wood, prunes with a light varnish note (though not offensive). Taste - raisins, prunes, wood and booze. Palate - medium bodied, rich and sweet middle with a little dry woodiness closing it out. Overall - interesting beer!

Bottle @Craig's. 2020 version. Black, lasting light tan head. Sweet dark malty aroma, swewt wood, swewt tobacco. Sweet dark malty flavoir, dark choc, sweet tobacco, . Warming. 2017 version. Black, lasting light tan head. Brighter, more woody aroma than the 2020. Dryer, more roasted. Also gooood. 2015 version. Oilier than the previous ones. Has some sweet, dark berry jam, perhaps a lttle oxidation, but works well. More sweet oak in the aroma. A little sweeter than 2020. 2014 version. Bright, dark malty, quite woody aroma, chocolate. Dryer than the previous ones. 2009 version. Quite a lot of dark berries in the aroma. A little lighter, but the fruity berries are nice.
