Description
Old Chimneys Brewery was started in 1995 by Alan Thomson, a Master Brewer who celebrated 40 years of brewing in 2017.

Located in Market Weston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border, Old Chimneys has achieved an enviable reputation for beer quality. The flagship brand,
Good King Henry Special Reserve, has for 8 years been the highest rated English beer on ratebeer.com

Alan ceased brewing at Market Weston in April 2019 to concentrate on collaborative brewing with top quality brewers in the UK and abroad,
starting with Grain (Norfolk), Northern Monk (Leeds) and Wylam (Newcastle).

The regular Good King Henry is now brewed under Alan’s supervision at Grain Brewery. The strength has been increased to 10% abv, and for the first time in 20 years it is available in KeyKeg as well as cask.

Changed to a client brewer as of 2019 on Brewver as Alan continues to brew elsewhere with the Old Chimneys name, mostly at Grain Brewery.

Dark brown. Light toasty nose with a hint of nuttiness and crackers. Sort of a thin body with a light crackery taste. Finishes quick, and far too light

Bottle Deep, blacky body with a creamy brown head. Aroma of wood, wine, malts, molasses, ... Quite complex and extremely well balanced aroma. Moderately bitter, moderately sweet, complex flavour of spices and malts. For an imperial stout not too heavy on the malts, well balanced and very complex!

Vintage 2005, many thanks to Phil_L Very dark mustard-coloured head over jet-black beer. End of bottle solid lumps. Beautiful brandy-like smell with dark fruits, steeped in alcohol, and liberately dosed with black coffee. Coffee², with a very strong sweetener, and doses of alcohol, fusels & benzene. Even molasses in the background, and black (REAL black) chocolate. Very sticky MF, full bodied, viscous as motor oil. Pretty complex, outstanding balance, but I’ve had more delicate flavours.

Bottle at home ... Dark amber bit loose foam head ... pine hop resins ... good fruit tangy ... little soapy ... but loads of citrus and pine ... quite drying ... well balanced... lots of building piney hop ... another great one... not my favourite style ... but one of the best in its class.

Bottle, dropped off very kindly by Marc Bartram, Bartrams Brewey with casks for the Beer Festival Poured dark brown with light beige head, aroma is very light but there are some sweet malts just detectable. This is a simple typical British Mild, but one that’s done well, ok so it doesn’t have the oomph of say a Beijing Black and it isn’t quite up there with my current favourite Welland Valley Mild, but it’s nice and I would happily have a pint or two of this. There is a nice swishy funky fruity sourness creeping through, it is a bit thin maybe but hey it’s a Mild and a rather nice one at that.
